Gateway Laptop
Model: M460G
OS: XP Home

I am trying to help a friend with his laptop. The problem is the laptop is not able to connect to the internet on it. When I go into the network connections there is 31 Network adapters that come up.

He told me about this I assume it is a virus of some kind. So i told him to install Malewarebytes and run a scan. He said that it found some but the network adapters where still there. He also said that he had reinstalled the os but they still came back.

I am have never seen this before so if anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated.

I would suggest going into device manager and removing ALL of the network adapters. Then restart the computer, this will cause it to locate the adapter and reload the driver.
Let me know if this works.

Wow, I've not seen anything like this. It sounds like some corruption in either the registry, which is not unlikely, or on the system board itself.
It's rather difficult to nail down stuff like this, but here is what I would do if I had the system in my shop.
I prefer to diagnose the hardware first, before chasing down software issues. I can't count how many times I've seen a bad ram chip cause unbeleivable issues that people spent days chasing with software fixes. Most computer stores want to reload windows as the first thing off the shelf, and although this often fixes things, it's my last resort because often times you lose something that is a pain to recover.
So with all that said:
First step: backup any data that you don't want to lose.
Next determine the brand of hard drive in the system, then go to the manufacturer's website and download the free diagnostic software for the hdd. If you have a problem finding this, just let me know and I'll help you out. Some hdd's don't have their own diags.
Next download and create a bootable cd of MS Memory Diagnostics
Run the hdd diags first, it doesn't take as long, and let it run the extended or long test.
Run the memory diags next, might want to let it run overnight, and when it starts up, hit the 'T' key to run the extended tests, let this run for a minimum of 2 complete passes, and preferably 3.
After that, then my next suggestion would be run sfc/scannow to make sure there are no damaged windows files.
Then open a command prompt and type: netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
This will reset the tcp/ip stack.
After that, remove them again and reboot to see what happens.

Thanks again for the assistance. Sorry for not getting back sooner. I only have an hour window to work on this a day.

Hard Drive is a Fujitsu 80GB Model: MHV2080AH
Downloaded "Windows Diagnostic Tool Ver. 1.12" from

http://storage.toshi...ware-utilities.

Followed the link but the link to download the file Windiag

was not working. Found it at

http://pcsupport.abo...-diagnostic.htm mtinst.exe.
Burn the iso to a cd

Ran Windows Diagnostic Tool Ver. 1.12 extended test.
Model Name : FUJITSU MHV2080AH
Serial No. : NT28T632EVAM
Firmware : 00830096
Total LBA : 950F8B0 h
Test Name : Extended Test
Result : PASS
Test Time : 19:06:59, November 07, 2012
The drive passed the Extended Test.

Ran Windiag and left it overnight and it ran through 5 passes

with no errors found.
Ran SFC /SCANNOW and that did not bring up any errors
Reset tcp/ip stack
Uninstall all of the drivers and rebooted

Windows detected new hardware and each one came back. Let me know what else we can try.
