Hello everyone,
I somehow got infected with a win32 virus or worm, that apparently caused havoc with my firewall and other programs. I've been trying to get computer cleaned up with various spyware and antivirus software.
I've followed instructions and hopefully have done this correctly. Could someone please check my Hijack log and help me out with it? Thank you so very much!!

Hi,

Looks like you have done a fairly good job on your log, just a few things left.

Please read this post completely, it may make it easier for you if you copy and paste this post to a new text document or print it for reference later.

Download a free 14 day trial of ewido from the link below. Install it and start it up. Follow the prompts to upgrade it, then close it down.

ewido

Download and install CleanUp! Here. Do not run it yet.

Carry out a free online virus scan from the following link. Type in name, for company type anything you like, add email address in relevant boxes.

Kaspersky

Boot into Safe Mode:
Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

Now run Ewido. click on the Scanner button, Select drives if you have more than one and then start. grab a cup of coffee, sandwiches, book as this may take some time. Once the first problem is detected ensure you tick the box for all (bottom left) and allow it to continue.

At the end of the scan, it may ask if you would like to delete anything found in archive or zipped files, OK that request, then click on save report. SAVE to the default location, it will then generate a text file. Copy that to post in this thread.

Now scan with HJT and check the following entries if they are there. Some may have been removed by earlier procedures.

Hi, Thank you very much for going over my log! I'm still having some weird problems with pop ups and a few other goofy things. I've followed your instructions above but had a difficult time with Kaspersky scan... it took days to try and scan my computer. Any idea why?

Sometimes the Kaspersky scan takes a very long time, no reason known.

Please disable WinPatrol whilst be fix as it may interfere with what we need to do.

Reboot into safe mode, rescan with HJT and check the following:

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

Ensure no windows open except HJT and click fix checked.

Reboot normally, rescan with HJT and post the log back.

Please also explain the other goofy things that are happening and give some idea as to the popups received

Hello, I disabled WinPatrol and booted to safe mode. Ran HJT log and the line R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page = is not there in safe mode. But returns when normal boot.

Also get a few strange errors ie.. found new hardware and trys to load hardware for my mouse, keyboard failures. I get various strange messages from time to time. As for the pop ups they were on Mozilla and had never received them before and can't remember what exactly they were. I shut down everything and just came back today to post here.

Thanks again for your help!! Here is new HJT log (although entry for Main,Local Page ) was not there to remove in safe mode. ***Also getting a message that windows can't open log file

Ok run HJT in normal mode and delete the following entries.

From your log, I see nothing in the ways of trojans, nor any evil entities attempting to possess your computer, except for Windows but it's too late for that one. :tazz:

Congratulations your log now appears to be clean. ;)

Here are some tips, to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future, I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

Detect and Remove Programs:
  • How to use Ad-Aware to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Ad-Aware.
  • How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
Prevention Programs:
  • Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
  • Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
  • IE/Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
  • MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
  • Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
Other necessary Programs:
  • AntiVirus Program<= An AntiVirus program is a must! Whether it is a free version like AVG or Anti-Vir, or a shareware version like Norton or Kapersky, this is a must have.
  • Firewall<= A firewall is definatley a must have. Two good free versions are Sygate and ZoneLabs.
  • More Secure Browser<= Internet Explorer is not the most secure and best browser. There are safer and better alternatives available. I recommend Firefox, however Opera and SlimBrowsers are good as well.

Thank you very much for your help :tazz: I had no knowledge of HJT or how to get rid of anything so I was a bit hesitant to post here. I'm glad that I read everything first and then found the courage.... you were terrific! Thanks again.

I was running everything possible to prevent something like this, but literally watched as a win32 virus changed norton antivirus and firewall ;) I think I'll be looking for something other than Norton products from now on.

Just one other thing, I was looking at the HJT log and saw quite a few references to online virus scans. Is it ok to get rid of these now?

Some of them I know what they are, and a couple of others I don't so I will leave them alone. But will get rid of the online scans!
