System Restore crashed computer

I have a Gateway all-in-one running Windows 7. Today I kept getting an error message about "can't install from hard disk" so I used system restore. I entered date of 2 days ago but got the same error after doing system restore. I did system restore again using earlier date and the computer will not restart. It is a black screen with a flashing
small circle. I get the same result when I try to restart in safe mode. I use AVG and just did a complete scan this weekend with nothing wrong. Please help.
