Hi GeeksToGo-

I am trying to help a friend with a hosed Sony Vaio laptop - Windows 7.
Unfortunately, I do not kbnow how or where they picked up this problem.

The original symptoms were that the passwords on their email had been changed.
Once I fixed that, it did it again at the next reboot.

I ran Spybot S&D and it identified a trojan "Smitfraud c generic"

Before finding you guys, I have tried a few things.

In safe mode, I have run "Roguekiller" "TDSSkiller" "adwcleaner" "aswmbr" and "smitfraudfix"

Some of these appeared to find and remedy the problem. But at the next reboot- it was back.

However the most relevant one of these "cures" - SMITFRAUDFIX would not run correctly.
Even when I right-clicked and "ran as Administrator" it gave me messages that I did not have permission.
So "Smitfraudfix" never properly ran.

Following the instructions on GeeksToGo forum, I ran OTL and the results are below.

I thank you in advance for any help you can give me!!!

Hello highnumber and welcome to Geeks to Go. I am sorry that you are having troubles with your computer and will try my best to help you. I know that being infected is very frustrating, but I will be here to help you through the whole process of cleaning. Removing malware can be difficult and complicated and will most likely take many steps, so please stick with me until I have declared your computer clean. I always recommend printing my instructions before following them in case you cannot keep this webpage open. Please be sure to alway follow all steps exactly as they are written and let me know what happens each time. Stop and ask if something unexpected happens or if you are unsure of how to proceed.

Please note that I am currently in training as a GeekU Senior. My posts must be reviewed by an instructor, so there may be a slight delay.

I am currently reviewing your log and will post back instructions soon. The OTL scan should also have produced an Extras log. If you have it, could you please post it for me?

Also please run this scan in the meantime:

Download aswMBR.exe to your desktop.
Double click the aswMBR.exe to run it Click the "Scan" button to start scan

Posted Image

On completion of the scan click save log, save it to your desktop and post in your next reply

Hi highnumber,

I see that some adware has infiltrated your computer. Lets run the following scans (in addition to the one mentioned above) to see if we can clear this up. Please run these scans in normal boot mode.

Step 1: Run OTL fix.
Start OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

Hi Buddierdl-

Here are the files you requested in your second email...

To answer your question
"how is it running now?"
It does seems to be running much faster.
Also- ran Spybot S&D and NO THREAT WAS FOUND!!!

I assume that means I am clean, but I will wait to see if you need anythigng else first.

THANK YOU again!

Hi highnumber,

Please stick with me a little bit longer. We are almost done. We need to get rid of one Chrome plugin that did not want to go away, run a few scans to pick up any remnants, and then we can clean up and secure your computer.

Step 1: Disable Chrome plugin.

Please open Chrome and copy the following text into the address bar:

chrome:plugins

Please locate the plugin named "MindSpark Toolbar Platform Plugin Stub" and disable it.

Step 2: Run MBAM scan.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
  • Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
  • The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
  • The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Extra Note:

If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Step 3: Run ESET online scan.

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

  • Please go here then click on: Posted Image

Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.

  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: Posted Image
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: Posted Image
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically. The scan may take several hours.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: Posted Image
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.
Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

Things I need in your next reply:
  • Were you able to disable the plugin?
  • MBAM log
  • ESET log
  • Is your computer still running okay?

Hi Buddierdl-

I could not find the plug-in you described.
I have attached a list of plug-ins located at CHROME:PLUGINS.
See if you can identify it from the list and I will proceed.
I did not follow any other steps, because I thought this needed to be done first.
Thanks!

The ESET scan found and removed another 21 threats.

Congratulations, highnumber. Your computer now appears to be clean. Please complete the followings steps to finalize the cleaning process.

Please update these programs, as old versions pose a security risk.
  • Java
Please download JavaRa to your desktop and unzip it to its own folder
    • Run JavaRa.exe, pick the language of your choice and click Select. Then click Remove Older Versions.
    • Accept any prompts.
    • Open JavaRa.exe again and select Search For Updates.
    • Select Update Using Sun Java's Website then click Search and click on the Open Webpage button. Download and install the latest Java Runtime Environment (JRE) version for your computer.
  • Adobe Reader. You can get the latest version here.

Please uninstall these malware leftovers from your Programs and Features menu in the control panel. If they do not show up, don't worry about them.
  • Coupon Alert
  • ShopAtHome.com Toolbar
  • Utility Chest Toolbar

Clean up OTL:
  • Open OTL and select the "CleanUp" button.
  • Allow the computer to reboot.

Delete possibly infected restore points. Your computer may have saved a restore point while it was infected, so we need to delete the old restore points and create a new, clean one.

To reset your restore points, please note that you will need to log into your computer with an account which has full administrator access.
  • Turn off System Restore.
    • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
    • Click Properties.
    • Click the System Protection tab.
    • Un-check the boxes next to your hard drives.
    • Click Apply, and then click OK.
  • Reboot.
  • Turn ON System Restore.
  • On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
  • Click Properties.
  • Click the System Protection tab.
  • Check the boxes next to your hard drives.
  • Click Apply, and then click OK.

Ensure that Windows is always updated. Keeping Windows updated is very important to prevent security vulnerabilities. I recommend turning on automatic updates following the instructions below:
  • First, click on Start and click onAll Programs, then Windows Update.
  • Click on Change Settings in the left pane and then check the option for Automatic Updates.

Always ensure that your firewall and anti-virus program are updated and running. These are your first line of defense against infection.

Make sure that you keep all of your programs updated. Out-of-date programs can make your computer more vulnerable to infection. Software manufacturers release updates to fix security problems as they are discovered. Secunia Personal Software Inspector, free to download here, is a good program that will scan your computer looking for programs that need to be updated.

This article has good information about how computers get infected. You can read it for good tips on staying clean and safe.
