My problem Involves my desktop HP computer running windows 7 and an Acer laptop running windows 7.

My old desktop computer hasn't had a driver update in years and cannot recognize my USB mouse or USB wireless adapter. My USB keyboard which I used on it long ago still works. I'm trying to transfer drivers from my laptop to my desktop (everything on my laptop works fine) using a CD (because my desktop cannot even recognize flash drives and has no network access).

I've backed up my laptop's driver files and put them in a folder on a CD and copied them to my desktop, however when I try to move and replace them into C:/windows/system32/drivers... I got a prompt saying I do not have permission to do so and I may try again (only to fail ofc) skip, or cancel. To get around this I changed the security properties of some of the files to grant me ownership (instead of TrustedInstaller) and full file control, and after replacing the driver files for my mouse with the files which were already in that directory, my mouse still doesn't work.

Can anyone help me update my drivers and get my mouse and USB wireless adapter working?

Go to HP's website and locate the driver downloads section; somewhere in there will be a list including your HP model number. Unfortunately, HP is not the most dependable on posting drivers for older units but you can try it. If you have loaded W7 on it and it is running it ok, I would tend to think that there is a problem with your system as opposed to being too old. USB drivers should be included in Windows 7, so if XP was the original operating system for the desktop then it should be capable of running Windows 7. If you have a separate USB wireless adapter card installed in your old box, then the drivers for that card should be on a separate CD that came with the card. If not, go to the card manufacturer's website and look for driver downloads.

Wrong move; never attempt to substitute drivers from one type of unit to use on another, 99% of the time you will have problems. I suggest deleting those drivers and get them off your desktop, they may cause more problems and error messages and make it that more difficult to find the solution to your problem.

Ok, like I referred to above, if your USB keyboard drivers are working the mouse should also. Definitely try substituting another mouse; to test, try to find an old, two-button "roller ball" type mouse as opposed to a modern wireless or laser mouse. Also try different USB ports. Enter Device Manager and see if there are any yellow alert icons anywhere in your USB port listing, usually toward the bottom. You should have one or more headings, "Standard Enhanced USB Host Controller", indicating that you are running USB 2. If fact, if you see any yellow alert icons in Device Manager, note them down when you post back.
