If it's working, leave it. If you have additional problems, then run WR-AIO.

Make sure you create a System Restore point now, with a working system.

Control Panel, System, Advanced System Settings, System Protection tab.
Click on Create.

Late update, but I had to test the computer for other problems (after I had created a system restore). The problems includes being unable to download windows updates, a slower fast boot etc. Chkdsk C: /f /r from inside windows 8 ( where we have to restart and not from the usb) is stuck at 28% and had to shut it down remotely after some time. When I tried a sfc / scannow, it resulted in several permission duplication messages ( not exactly errors though), and a corrupt webio.dll file. The file in question has a value of 0 kb as opposed to 356 kb in my other computer. I will keep testing for more problems so far but I think I will try to clean install windows 8 afterwards.

To transfer my files, I am going to use windows easy transfer. With that being said, all my permissions are inherited from the c: directory ( that includes sub folders and child objects as well), so will WET also transfer those permissions or will it adjust to the new windows 8 installation?

How will you use WET to transfer files? Are you going to install to a different drive or partition?

My recommendation would be to do an image backup to an external hard drive. Everyone should have one and be doing regular backups anyway so now would be a good time to invest in one.

Firstly my windows installation is a 32 bit one ( I couldn't upgrade to 64 bit since it wasn't allowed), so for now I will clean install a 64 bit version of windows 8 on the same HDD. To transfer my personal settings and effects, I plan to use WET. To be honest, I did use this before when I clean installed windows 7 on my computer, and I am not sure how an image backup would help transfer any of my files.

Regardless I have already made an image backup in case my install fails (or I hope to resort to using "rollback" to re install the previous windows installation). With that being said, my only question was whether folders being transferred would retain their previous permission and ownership or would they adapt to the new installation ( the latter would be most preferable).

Sorry, I don't know and I can't find anything that even talks about it. My guess would be that it does not and will use the settings/permissions of the new computer/install.

Oh okay, that would be fine also ( I will try modifying each folder to see if anything is affected ).

Just an update. In order to fully work with WET, I decided to get rid of any unnecessary programs and services and then make a whole image as well as an WET backup. This might take time since I have a trip planned. In any case, I will update this post if the process succeeds ( or fails, whatever goes).

So, after finally completing a custom install ( which took longer than upgrade install, quite different from a windows 7 install), I had ran into some problems.

Note, I have not transferred anything from WET yet.

The first was windows update, which managed to install some drivers but couldn't install normal updates ( the kb2 ones), they were always stuck at 0%. After using the maintenance tool, it was fixed and everything was updated. So there goes the first problem.

My second move was to use sfc /scannow ( which resulted in no errors), and then a chkdsk. Now I used /f which found no errors but when I went into /r, it hung around 28% for about an hour before I stopped it. I am not sure if it should take longer than that ( I mean, /r takes a while but not that much time). So next I went ahead and restarted in a recovery console and did a chkdsk /r from there. No problems were detected. So I used samsung hdd tools (es tool ) to check again, and no problems ( or all has passed).

With that being said, I want to know why it stays at that point ( or what it is currently scanning, since the new graphical chkdsk doesn't show any information unlike its predecessor). Does it keep a log or something?

Sorry, It seems like I was wrong. The chkdsk /r just takes a lot of time ( took about 3 hours ). It restarted and stated 'scanning and fixing disk 100%' or something like that. I will continue with the transfer from WET.

Sorry for the late ( very late post), but I managed to fully install windows 8 64 bit pro edition ( with media center to boot) on my computer. As before, chkdsk and hdd smart check found no problems.

However, going into WET, I ran into a hassle. Every time I tried to transfer, at the end it kept asking for my previous account's password. The password inserted was always incorrect ( and I don't know what files were rejected afterwards) because a lot of the files were there. So I tried using WET on the windows 7 computer and it didn't ask for a pass ( which makes it a windows 8 problem). Either way, I transferred everything manually, and found no problems with the files afterwards (this took some time).

Apart from a few problems( such as being unable to eject an external usb until I close task manager), there doesn't seem to be any problems. If I do a sfc scandisk, it shows no problems ( but the log notes duplicate permissions, whether that is a problem, I don't know).

There are a lot of performance improvements compared to before, especially the boot time ( went from around 34 seconds to around 12-13 seconds, using the same startup programs and services).

Overall, I am quite glad this problem was solved without a hassle. Thanks for the help.
