I have an old frankencomputer running windows xp using usb 1.1. I picked up a netgear n300 wireless usb adapter not thinking about how my wireless connection speed would be affected (slowed) using the old usb 1.1 connections on this computer. The connection is very slow and runs at a capacity around 30k/sec max.

I noticed that when I am transferring files locally to my mp3 player or to a usb external harddrive, the speed increases to 300k+/second. This is not a random occurrence. Every time i transfer like this my speed increases.

Right now, I have a 5gb folder that i just delete off the usb hard drive and copy back onto from my local hd, giving me a little over an hour of normal internet usage per copy/paste as the internet speed increases during that local file transfer. This is silly and ridiculous to do tho :)

Can anyone tell me why this is happening? Actually, I dont even care. Is there a program I can get to make this speed increase happen all the time or something that can mimic me transferring the files so I can get the speed increase constantly?

Thanks,
Ray

:welcome:

This seems like a really odd issue lets check the settings on your connection.

Please download MINITOOLBOX and run it.
http://download.blee...MiniToolBox.exe

Checkmark following boxes:

Report IE Proxy Settings
Report FF Proxy Settings
List content of Hosts
List IP configuration
List Winsock Entries
List last 10 Event Viewer log
List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size
List Devices (problems only)

Click Go and post the result.

Download Autoruns and Autorunsc Unzip it to your desktop and then double click autoruns.exe After the scan is finished then click on File>>>>>>>>>>>Save The default name will be autoruns.arn make sure to save it as Autoruns.txt under the file type option. in other words make sure it is a .txt file instead of .arn Attach the text in your next reply.

Is there any reason you are not using an antivirus?

Open Msconfig and under the start up tab untick all items except the usb device.

Open your Device Manager and disable the 1394 Net Adapter = 1394 Connection (Connected) Driver please.

Change your dns to open dns or Google dns.
http://theos.in/wind...ns-server-list/

Open a command prompt copy and paste the commands below one at a time hitting enter after each.

ipconfig /flushdns

ipconfig /registerdns

net stop "dns client"

net start "dns client"
netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log

nbtstat -R

nbtstat -RR

netsh winsock reset catalog

Exit

Restart computer.

Download TFC from the download link below and save the file on your desktop.
http://oldtimer.geekstogo.com/TFC.exe
Close ALL running applications as TFC will terminate them before attempting to clean up the temporary files.
Double-click on the TFC icon.
When the program starts, click on the Start button. TFC will terminate the Explorer process and all running applications and then begin the process of cleaning out all of your temp folders.
When done, press OK to reboot your computer and finish the cleanup.

Please let me know of any issues and also post a new minitoolbox and the Autoruns log please.

Antivirus is not installed by my choice. Here is the logfile from minitoolbox. Also to note, the command "netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log" did not work as ipv4 was not present. there was an ipv6 and ipv listed, tho.
