So I ran aswMBR, OTL, chkdsk and sfc (sfc hadn't finished by the time they needed to leave so they were going to write down any messages and then reboot the computer and let me know how it performed. Log files are below.

Chkdsk didn't show any errors, at least on the box that came up quickly and then went away as the laptop was rebooting.

At the completion of running chkdsk since it had to reboot I could see one of the issues he is talking aboout...after clicking his name and when the computer is logging in, the desktop shows up with all the icons grayed out and then over the next minute they fill in with color...he said that never seemed to happen that way in the past....then when you fire up Internet Explorer it takes it at least a minute to come up and probably another 30 seconds for it to bring up his home page (set to MSN). Maybe sfr will fix that issue...

I don't know if this is unrelated or not but when I went to the geekstogo forum a message popped up "Stop running the script?" "A script on this page is causing IE to run slowly. If it continues to run your computer might become unresponsive." and I'm given Yes or No. If I select No the box stays there, if I select yes it goes away....but it never tells me what the issue is with the script.

He also has a bunch of programs in his Startup that run (epson ink monitor and a couple Dell programs, etc.) that I know are slowing things down and I'd like to get rid of, but they've always run so I don't think they're a cause of his current complaint of the computer is running slow...

I'll let you know what he says about the performance once the laptop reboots after the completion of sfc. Thanks again for your help!!!!

  • OTL may ask to reboot the machine. Please do so if asked.
  • Click the OK button.
  • A report will open. Copy and Paste that report in your next reply.
  • If the machine reboots, the log will be located at C:\_OTL\MovedFiles\mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log, where mmddyyyy_hhmmss is the date and the time of the tool run.

Step 2.

Tick "All" options.
Press "Scan".
It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.

Please copy and paste the log to your reply

Step 3.

Please download the latest version of TDSSKiller from here and save it to your Desktop.
  • Doubleclick on TDSSKiller.exe to run the application, then click on Change parameters.
    Posted Image
  • Put a checkmark beside loaded modules.
    Posted Image
  • A reboot will be needed to apply the changes. Do it.
  • TDSSKiller will launch automatically after the reboot. Also your computer may seem very slow and unusable. This is normal. Give it enough time to load your background programs.
  • Then click on Change parameters in TDSSKiller.
  • Check all boxes then click OK.
    Posted Image
  • Click the Start Scan button.
    Posted Image
  • The scan should take no longer than 2 minutes.
  • If a suspicious object is detected, the default action will be Skip, click on Continue.
    Posted Image
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
    Posted Image
Note: If Cure is not available, please choose Skip instead, do not choose Delete unless instructed.
  • A report will be created in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Step 4.

Please post:

OTL fix log
FSS.txt
TDSSKiller log

Please update me on the computer issues and if there has been any improvement in speed

I ran OTL, FSS and TDSSS as requested. The log files are below. After TDSSS completed it showed a bunch of suspicious objects but never gave me the opportunity to "Cure" them, I guess because they weren't malicious? I actually ran it twice thinking that maybe I missed a step somewhere...

After it had finished I re-enabled malwarebytes and rebooted. It still "colors up" the icons very slowly and IE opens very slowly. Once IE is up it seems to change websites quickly, I also opened a bunch of his other programs and they seem to open OK.

I still get that "Script running slowly" error when I go into this thread (but not the Parent thread), not sure what's going on with that.

Please post the full TDSSKiller log that shows the full list.

A report will be created in your root directory, (usually C:\ folder) in the form of "TDSSKiller.[Version]_[Date]_[Time]_log.txt". Please copy and paste the contents of that file here.

Hi, the name of the file I copied and pasted above is TDSSKiller.2.8.15.0_12.12.2012_10.37.14_log.txt (and it was the only one that I recall seeing in the root directory)...maybe when I ran it the second time it overwrote the original file?

Sorry for messing up...

Not a problem. That helped me see a few things along with the error log.

Please follow these steps to eliminate the errors from a corrupt install of McAfee:

Step 1.

Go to this page and read the instructions first all the way through.

Step 2.

Depending on who your ISP is or if you bought it directly go here to download the product. Also make sure you have your activation code. If they do not allow you to download it before the uninstall skip to the next step.

Step 2.

Follow the uninstall instructions for your version of Windows in the step 1 instructions on the McAfee instructions page.

Step 3.

  • download the utility MCPR.exe (MCPR © McAfee, Inc)
  • Right-click the file MCPR.exe and select Run as administrator for Vista or Windows 7
  • once the process of deleting McAfee products is over (the removal process may take a minute), the McAfee Cleanup window appears.
  • click Yes to reboot your computer and to finish the removal process of McAfee products

Step 4.

Reinstall your McAfee product now by running the install you downloaded in Step 1 on this page or go to step 3 in the McAfee instructions to log in and install your product.

Greetings,

I uninstalled Mcafee as specified and then reinstalled it. I hate to say it but the computer seems much slower than it was :-( Especially starting up Internet Explorer...I don't know if maybe adding in Malwarebytes would be causing these slowness issues? I didn't think about turning it off and rebooting a few times and see if that made any difference.

I still get the "Stop running the script" in this thread on IE so I suppose there's still something amiss there..

I removed Google Desktop and Netwaiting (whatever that is) off the computer and that seemed to help with the icons coloring in a little faster...

Any thoughts?

Sorry for dragging this out so long...

Next we will check for driver conflicts

Step 1: Start MSConfig

Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or provide confirmation.

Step 2: Configure Selective Startup options

1.In the System Configuration Utility dialog box, click Selective Startup on the General tab.

Posted Image

2.Click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
Note The Use Original Boot.ini check box is unavailable.

3.Click the Services tab.

Posted Image

4.Click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box.
5.Click Disable All, and then click OK.
6. When you are prompted, click Restart.

Once back in windows does the problem still occur ?

If it does not then run MSConfig again and start half of the services and reboot does IE behave itself and start in a timely manner ?
If this again does not slow down IE then run MSConfig and re-enable half of the remaining services

Once the bad service has been located then let me know which one it was

Hi,

I just finished disabling/enabling the services...I timed it from when I clicked on "Fred" to when IE was on the MSN page (homepage)

No services loaded took 17 seconds.

All services but MBAM Service and MBAM scheduler 20 seconds

All services including MBAM's took 35 seconds.

Then I went back and enabled a Normal startup and it took 95 seconds. This was a consistent 95 seconds. Painfully slow....

The icons that are currently loaded on the taskbar are

Synaptics Pointing Device
SSC Service Utility
Epson Stylus Printer
Mcafee Security Center
Malwarebytes
Speakers
Dell Support Center
Dell Quickset
APC Powerchute
Dell Wireless Utility
Windows Wireless

I told him that since we now have Malwarebytes loaded it naturally is going to take longer to boot then it used to before he had the issue of losing his machine. I also told him that we could remove a few more icons from his taskbar (SSC Service, Dell Support, maybe Dell Quickset?) and that would help the response time some...or he could put the machine into Hibernate mode and it would come up a little quicker (his hibernate mode is much slower to go into/come out of hibernate than this Windows 7 laptop I'm typing on due to increased memory/faster process/different OS I assume)...

He said he has started just logging onto the machine and then walking away for a couple minutes and by the time he gets back it is up and running....

Any thoughts?

Thanks!!!! Have a nice weekend if I don't talk to you before next week (I saw your posting about limited access).

You can narrow down what loads slowly not only in services but in Startup tab to see what is taking all the time.

Go to the startup tab and remove all but the AV and any necessary one for keyboard or such then boot and check the time. After that add them back one half and see if it slows. If it does then cut that half in half and try it so you narrow down the startup item that is adding to the startup time dramatically.

Once you identify the bad startup item let me know. The one that acts up may also be contributing to the issue when the browser loads slowly initially as well.

Let me know what you find.

Sorry for the delayed posting....user went away for a few days and I just got access to the laptop...I disabled all startup programs and re enabled them one by one...finally ended up removing Synaptics touchpad, SSC (printer monitor for Epson printer) and Dell Quickset. APC monitoring software was a real culprit in the slowdown but can't remove that for obvious reasons.

I think there is also an issue with IE taking forever to load due to its age since Firefox loads within seconds...

Now the machine logs on and brings up a website within 60 seconds so the end user is happy. I also told him he can use "hibernate" and that will speed up his shutdown startup times...

He's happy with this and all the work that you have done to get his laptop and data back. You can call this one complete.

Thanks again for all your help, never would have gotten this back by myself.

Happy Holidays!!!

You can reset IE:

Reset IE8:

  • Please download this Microsoft FixIt and save it to the desktop.
  • Double click on MicrosoftFixit50195.exe select I Agree and click on Next.
  • Follow the on-screen prompts.
  • You may delete MicrosoftFixit50195.exe when finished and or keep it if any problems in the future with IE8.
  • Next time IE8 is launched you will be prompted to reapply settings again, this is normal.
Note: Any add-ons will require to be reapplied after the above reset.

He's happy with this and all the work that you have done to get his laptop and data back. You can call this one complete.

Will do just redo the close for cleanup.

Thanks again for all your help, never would have gotten this back by myself.

You are welcome

Happy Holidays!!!

And Happy Holidays to you and yours!
