Hi I hope someone can help me. I am running Win7 Pro, all has been fine till recently when something happened I am not sure what. But I can not check for updates it comes up with error 80073712. I have tried all the help that is recomended but still nothing. The one thing that is mentioned to try is sfc /scannow but that will not run at all it says windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation. I have also tried to run the windows dvd to do an install but this will not run either. Hope you can help as its driving me mad. Cheers Reg

Hi
when you tried the sfc /scannow did you open command prompt by right clicking and running as administrator?
You could also try a rolling back to a restore point when things where working well.
You could try also try error-checking and check both tick boxes.
Hope that's of some help.

Hi Hog883
Have you tried these Microsoft fixes for the problem? click here or here
If the previous fixes fail you could then try Microsoft's System Update Readiness Tool
Good luck

Hello hog883,

Thanks for the log. Firstly, I want to make sure that you have all of your files backed up? The error that you have isn't easy to fix and things can go wrong - I'll do my best to avert a crisis, but you never know with these things. It's better to be safe than sorry :) This is going to take a few more logs and registry exports to completely diagnose, so please bear with me through what may appear to be useless steps.

  • Navigate to the following folder:

    C:\Windows\Logs
  • Right-click and on the CBS folder and select Copy.
  • Minimise all open windows and right-click on your Desktop, then select Paste.
  • Right-click on the CBS folder on your Desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • A file, CBS.zip, should appear on your Desktop.

Then attach this to your next post please!

Hi Reg,

I don't know the forum attachment size limit off the top of my head, but it does sound likely. Do you have a Skydrive or Dropbox that you could upload it to? Alternatively, upload it to a file-sharing website of your choice and send me the link please :)
