Whenever you install free software always install in the custom mode and deselect any and all tool bars

I do that already; thanks for the tip though! The infection was most probably bundled in the utility programs or triggered by the installation of them. I removed them after noticing the bad impact on the OS and the different warnings I had from the firewall.
