Nice try! but no good. Strangely it did say found new device / software, and something like updating/installing device, but then reverted to the usual error message...

OK next phase is to update the filters upper and lower. Now rather than get you to rummage in the registry there is an MS fixit that will do it for you

Run the fixit on this page

OK i'm trying to use this software but given that it's aimed at my cd / dvd drives, i'm not really able to choose certain options. for example it's asking if my problem is reading or writing a specific cd/dvd drive, when my problem is neither...

OK download the attached zip file

Extract all four files to C:\windows\inf
When they are in place then right click each in turn and select install

Reboot and try the USB

Is it worth doing a system restore?

Not sure as this appears to be related to your USB hub as opposed to software issues

Hmm, so I guess this all rules out the possibility of damage done by Malware?

Yes, you can try a system restore but if it is hardware then it will make no difference

Hi, yes I'm a bit concerend about doing a system restart, as I'm worried about returning my computer to the state where my browser redirected, and also losing certain software etc? I'll give it a go if you think i should though, but do please let me know if you can think of anything else to try. If not, I thoroughly appreciate all the time and help you've given me on this!
