As I understand it the error shown in the BSOD can be caused by a number of things including malware, hard drive problems, memory problems, hardware failings, driver conflicts and bios problems.

We have extensively covered the malware possibility. I don't see any malware at all.

We have tested for memory and hard drive errors and you stated that you had updated your drivers.

Also, is that the paid version or the free version of AVAST that you are running? If it is the paid version Windows Defender should be kept turned off as there will be conflict.

You mentioned a graphics card error at one stage. Perhaps we should canvass that some more.

Here are two links that might be helpful with checking the graphics card:

http://www.ehow.com/...video-card.html

Have a look and tell me how you get on.

Dear emerald,

I hadn't updated the drivers for the graphics card - I would have told you. I did it just now, so I'll give it a couple of days and let you know how it goes. I'll also go by an additional fan, in case it's a matter of overheating. If those won't work, I'll delve deeper into the links you sent me. Once more, I'd like to thank you very much for your help, it has been precious.

Oh dear I must have misunderstood you. I was referring to post #21.

I did it just now, so I'll give it a couple of days and let you know how it goes.

Look forward to hearing how you get on.

Dear emerald,

The problem seems to persist.. My computer today crashed as soon as I opened it and tried to run firefox. I got a BSOD, then it restarted. It told me that there was a Media Test failure, and to insert a bootable disk. I did a cold boot, then it told me that a disk error occurred, and to press ctrl+alt+del to restart. When I opened it, Windows ran diagnostics & repair. It told me that the error lied into non-definitive (that's a translation) changes in the system. The error code was 0X490. It told me it couldn't fix it.. Now the computer runs properly again. That leaves me all the more confused... Do you perhaps have any ideas?

My many thanks.

Bit confused myself.

I am consulting to see if any of my colleagues have ideas on this. Could be a while as we are in different time zones.

Meantime tell me if you get another one. :)

Hello again Theo Haris,

Looks like we may have hard drive problems... might even be beginning to fail.

Let's do this:

Copy (Ctrl +C) and paste (Ctrl +V) the text in the code box below to Notepad.

@Echo off
cmd /c chkdsk c: |find /v "percent" >> "%userprofile%\desktop\checkhd.txt"
del %0

Save it to your desktop as File name: chkhd.bat
Save as type: All Files

Once done, right click chkhd.bat and run as administrator. A command window will open. This is quite normal. Chkdsk will run in read only mode it will take a while, just be patient and let it do it's job.

Notepad will open with some text. Please copy and post the contents back here.

The above script was written specifically for this person's computer. It should NOT to be used on another computer.

Further to my last post and in addition to the above.

One of my colleagues has suggested a manufacturer's hard drive test would be a good idea.

I think it would be too, so...

Go to the link below for instructions on how to check an Acer Hard Drive

http://acer--uk.cust...g-the-hard-disk

Come back and tell me how you got on.

Dear emerald,

Once more I would like to help you for your continuing assistance; I really appreciate it.

Here is the log of the chkdsk.bat. The first time I ran it, I got a BSOD and the computer restarted. Then it worked. I also ran the diagnostic tool you sent me, but only the quick test, which passed. Tomorrow I'll run the extended test and tell you of the result.

My best,
Theo

Hello Theo Haris,

Look forward to hearing how that goes. Also would you carry out these actions:

Right click on (My) Computer and select Manage (Continue) Then the Event Viewer. Next select Windows Logs (Log Summary in W7). Right click on System (View Events Log and Clear Log (Right Hand Column in W7 Prof), Clear. Repeat for Application.

Reboot

Next

Start, All Programs, Accessories then right click on Command Prompt and Run as Administrator. Then type (with an Enter after each line).
sfc /scannow

Note: The gaps should be there.

(This will check your critical system files. Tell me how that goes in particular does it complain when finished that it couldn't fix everything?)

Step 2

Please download DDS
and save it to your desktop.

* Disable any script blocking protection
* Right click dds.pif and RUN As Admin to run the tool.
* When done, two DDS.txt's will open.
* Save both reports to your desktop.

---------------------------------------------------
Please include the contents of the following in your next reply:

DDS.txt
Attach.txt.

After that

Download BlueScreenView

Double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program. (Vista or Win 7 must right click and Run As Administrator)
When scanning is done, go Edit, Select All.

Go File, Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.
Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

So when you come back please post

  • tell me about the hard drive test
  • tell me how SFC went
  • the two DDS.txt's
  • ScreenView BSOD.txt

Dear emerald,

Here's the update you asked for.

1. The extended test of the hard drive was interrupted. I got the message "Too many bad sectors detected" and a red X, so that's fail.

2. SFC ran smoothly. At the end I got the following message: "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations"

3. The two DDS logs and BSOD.txt are pasted below.

By the way, my computer has been acting flawlessly the past couple of days. I also bought yesterday a fan to put below the laptop, perhaps that might have helped...

Thank you once more for your help!

Hello again Theo Haris,

While you computer seems to be working okay for now, those scans show there is a corruption there.

My best thought is that there is a problem with your hard drive. The extended test failed and the symptoms are consistent with a slowling failing drive. It might suddenly go one day.

In your position I would take it to your supplier, it's fairly new and should still be under warrantee. They should replace the drive.

Dear emerald,

I think your suggestion makes sense and I will follow it. Once more, I'd like to thank you for all of the help you have provided over the past few days.

My best,
