Other folders that are present (default, default user, paula, and public) all have a file named ntuser.dat without any other file paths present.

My idea is that you ran a backup to the same drive you operate out of, explaining why you're seeing it's more full than it should be.

I just want to find out if there's anything else we need to worry about apart from this.

Evidently I did run a back up to the same drive I operate from. I'm not sure about the question of missing files under Paula.PaulaPc. ?? I am not aware of missing files from this area.
I have not backed up the Paula.PaulaPC and if I need to reformat the hard drive should I back those files up?

Hi PHutch,

There's no need to reformat. NeonFx was gracious to offer his assistance and he pretty much verified my thoughts. I had mentioned before that backing up to the C: drive (which is the same drive that your OS is operating from) can cause the type of problem you are experiencing. The Paula.PaulaPC folder on your C: drive needs to be transfered to another source of storage, be it an external or an online backup service such as Mozy, which offers 2GB's of free space with the trial version or Carbonite, which offers a 15-day free trial. You even have a DropBox acct. now where you can save your most precious files though it has a 2GB minimum for the free version.

There are several other online storage facilities, too! Wikipedia offers a comparison chart of online backup services for you to choose from. I see that Microsoft SkyDrive offers 7 GB's of free space for new users and 25 GB's of free space to older users. Be sure to compare the file sizes that are acceptible for which ever meets your needs.

Even if you do decide to backup to an external HD, they are mechanical devices and do fail from time to time as well. It is beneficial to have more than one backup for the files you deem irreplacable.

Your hard drive is fine:

I have highlighted what I was looking for in red below:

472922135 KB total disk space.
273268116 KB in 151007 files.
91508 KB in 31105 indexes.
0 KB in bad sectors.
380243 KB in use by the system.
65536 KB occupied by the log file.
199182268 KB available on disk.

That's what I wanted to see!

And your RAM is in good standings as well. When I had you run the on board Memory Diagnostics Tool (mdsched.exe), under normal circumstances, if you did not receive a pop-up (which you did not), means it did not find a problem.

To start with, if you have an external, transfer the Paula.PaulaPC folder to the external. That should fix the slowness you have been experiencing since the backup was directed to the C: drive. Next, check into an online storage program that will meet your needs.

If you have any questions concerning the online storage programs that catch your eye, don't hesitate to start a new thread requesting others' opinions and what they would recommend.


Let us know if your computer is functioning much better once you get that folder transferred.

Thank Neon for me for assisting.

I have copied the Paula.PaulaPC materials to an external (and I am looking at online storage options, thanks); now that I have the Paula.PaulaPC folder copied to the external hard drive, is it safe to delete from my computer?
Am I understanding right, the reason I have only half of my memory on my hard drive is because the Paula.PaulaPc is a mirror from the back up I did to the C drive?

Yes. It is an identical copy of everything that is on PaulaPC. From what I can tell, if the name of your computer is PaulaPC, then it is an exact copy of everything on your HD.

If you are certain that the folder in it's entirety was moved successfully, yes, please delete the folder on your C: drive and let me know if you notice a difference in performance.

At this time, I am not having difficulty opening files or programs. AND the memory on my hard drive is back to less than half usage.

Woo hoo!

That is great news! And you are very welcome! Thank you for letting us know that all is back to normal.

Make sure to look into those online backup options and keep an eye on the battery monitor if you plan on walking away. I can't count the times I've allowed my laptop to shut down because I walked away and forgot the AC adapter was unplugged.

I have initiated an online backup up with Carbonite.
I mostly leave my computer plugged in.. every now and then I let the battery drain, but that one night was a rare occasion that I did not pay attention.

Wonderful PHutch! That is good to hear!

If I may reflect on battery life for a moment:

When you use your AC adapter a majority of the time with the battery installed, it will keep the battery in a state of continuous charge resulting in over charging which shortens the life of the battery. I've had to replace a few batteries in the past and they are not cheap.
