Ok Folks- I'm through trying to solve this myself so I'm throwing myself into your experienced hands.
A couple days ago a virus/ malware ran automatically from a ---.RAR file that I had downloaded. I believe this was either nail.exe or aurareco.exe. While trying to clean it, I stumbled on the Add/ Remove Program of something I didn't recognize: The ABI Network: A Division of Direct Revenue. I was in turn directed to a website to dowload a tool to remove the adware. AVG Virus scan was good- so I foolishly ran it. This, I feel, did something very similar to my first infection, the installation program hung and I had to "End Program". I tried to do a System Restore- but it looked like the virus wiped all of my previous restore points.

My computer starting slowing down so I ended tasks of aurareco.exe and maybe someother .tmp files I felt were associated. This is when I found your site and others having similar problems.

I downloaded some important software- HiJack This, Ewido, Cleanup!, NailFix, Hoster, CCleaner, so I'm all set! I want to know that I have all of the virus cleaned out. The first problem is, which may or may not be related to the infections, is that I can't reboot XP PRO into Safe Mode at all in order to use the nail fix. I press F5/8 for the whole bootup process not knowing for sure when to press it, but it always loads the win logo and then windows in normal mode. I've done it a number of times and checked Windows Help and websites for booting in safe mode. So I turned the comp off for a minute and tried it again for the duration after the beep - but before the logo. No good. The only way to get to the Advanced Boot up screen was to reset as it was loading the OS. Then it says "Sorry for the inconvenience...etc. and gives me the options with the countdown. At this point my keyboard doesn't work to move the highlight to safe mode, so the countdown times out and it boots again in the highlited normal mode. So I looked around for that issue and I'm about to start with an XP Recovery CD as one site mentioned but I hope I can get someone to help me through all my problems.
Thanks in advance- you folks are awesome!
