Modem Madness

So, the deal is, my mother just bought a new modem. Me not really thinking too much about it didn't even look at it. I assumed that she thoroughly checked to make sure it was correct for our service, due to the fact that she pays the dern bill. 2 Months pass and she loses the receipt to the thing and I finally go to hook it up and guess whaaaat. It's a cable modem and not a DSL one, and we have a DSL service. Is there any way to hook my internet into this modem, or did my mother just waste $80 on this thing?
