Freezes on updates

I am trying to find a cure for a friends computer short of throwing it out the window. It is an Acer Aspire 5315 with windows Vista. It does not ever actually boot up to a full screen with even the start menu option. It goes to an updating: Like on 3 of 3 and freezes. I have tried the repair utility that vista has with 0 luck and also tried to just install XP professional with an upgrade disc I have but apparently that is not allowed either as it is not a full version? Looking for some suggestions.
