Laptop:
- Dell Latitude D610
- Windows XP Professional
Desktop (hooked up to home cable internet provider):
- Asus Essentio Series
- Windows 7
- has Netgear wireless router to allow home wifi network

I've had no problems getting my Android phone or my kids' iPods to access the wifi service at home, so I expected to easily use my laptop on the wifi network. It's not working.
I haven't used my laptop in a while (and never on home wifi network, only set up a few months ago), usually stays plugged in to ethernet at work. Brought it home today, was going to use home wifi and get some work done. Wireless Network Connection shows that the laptop is picking up my home wifi network, and shows that it is connected, but continues to say "Validating Identity" and is not allowing me to access wireless services.

- Wireless Network Connection Properties says Connect using: Intel® PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection
- From there, I select the Wireless Networks tab, and select the name of my home network under the Preferred Networks section, then select Properties
- 3 tabs then say Association, Authentication, Connection
- Association tab: Network name (SSID) - then, name of my home wifi network
Wireless network key
Network Authentication: (Open, Shared, WPA, or WPA-PSK) -- I select WPA-PSK
Data encryption: (TKIP or AES) -- I select AES
Network key --- I enter the password we use on the Netgear wifi server

When I hit the "Connect" button to connect to the network, it will say, "Please wait while Windows connects to the network" then after several seconds, it will say that it has connected, but then will sit there with a yellow star above the 5 green bars showing wifi signal strength, and just to the left of the star it says "Validating identity" and will stay that way indefinitely. I try to click on internet, but no connection. The little status icon that's supposed to indicate your wireless network status in the bottom right of the computer screen (in the taskbar) shows a computer with a yellow dot moving back and forth beneath it. Double click that status icon to pull up Wireless Network Connection Status and it shows
Connection
Status: Validating identity
Network: (name of my home network)
Duration: (currently at 02:59:50 -- yes "connected" for almost 3 hours, but not actually allowing internet connectivity)
Speed 54.0 Mbps
Signal Strength: 5 bars
Activity
Packets: Sent 256 Received 3

Sorry if this is over-detailed, (or maybe I've actually given too few details to solve the problem).
It would be extremely helpful to get my laptop wifi working at home so I can bring some work home a lot easier, especially through the next 2 weeks of holiday season.
If anyone can help me ASAP, I'd be extremely grateful.

The first thing that I would try is to open your device manager and left click the + next to the network adapters tree to expand it.Find your wireless driver right click select uninstall. Then reboot your machine upon reboot windows will auto re-install the driver for you.You will need to re-enter the password for the router but hopefully now it will connect for you.

If not then please send me the log below from the machine in question but run the tool when the machine is in range of your router and says it is connected and all of that jive. :)

Please download MINITOOLBOX and run it.

I got it fixed, using some advice from another forum ( http://homecommunity...p/100786/page/3 ), the details of which I will paste below. It was a very easy fix, after all the time I wasted.... Here is the text from that forum. Hope it helps:

Another possibility for anyone else out there who happens to find this thread while searching for problems is that the Laptop if its old enough and running windows XP, does not have the ability to recognize the WPA2 security protocols, which if a new router is installed, is probably the security the network has. This is a really easy fix:
First download the Microsoft XP update KB893357 on a computer that has internet and get it to the computer that doesn't via flash drive or burning it to a CD.
Run that update, it probably will make you restart your computer.
Once that is done go in to the wireless network properties of the network you are trying to connect to, as explained in some earlier posts when they were navigating to the Authentication tab.
On the first tab, which should be labeled Association, change the network authentication to WPA2-psk, leave the data encryption as AES (though if AES doesn't work try the TKIP).
Enter in the network password in both fields and hit OK.
It took a try or two for the computer to connect with the network so be patient.
This process worked on an old compaq presario m2000 with a new linksys E2000 router.
Good luck fixing your computer.
