5 yr old Notebook, new battery 6 months ago. Screen blank but with faint image in background. Sometimes works after being shut down for several days. Computer works fine with remote monitor. Is this a backlight failure or could this be the screen close switch. If so how repairable? BestBuy says screen failure more expensive to repair than computer is worth...probably rather sell a new one?

Good troubleshooting done already so well done for that

What you describe could indeed be a backlight problem but it could also be an inverter issue, what the inverter does is control the amount of power going to the backlight, when one goes bad the output becomes unstable and so it will function ok one minute but not the next.

Replacing an inverter is both less expensive and less difficult to do than it is a backlight, many techs though will replace both the backlight and the inverter at the same time to save having to dismantle the notebook again if for example they have replaced the backlight only to find that the inverter is bad or vice versa, unfortunately only you can decide whether you replace the inverter or backlight first or both at the same time.
