Hello! We have a recently purchased a Denon DHT-1513BA surround sound system and we're having a bit of trouble setting it all up. Physically the speakers seem to be hooked up correctly as when we go to Channel Level --> Test Tone there is sound coming from all the speakers and the subwoofer, but when the TV is turned on the sound still just comes from the television's internal speakers. Someone suggested hooking it up to the cable box instead, but here is another issue: both out cable box and our Blu-Ray player only have one HDMI output, so it seems like none of these things can be hooked up to each other. I know HDMI splitters exist but it doesn't seem like we should have to buy two just to get the very expensive speakers to play from both the television and the Blu-Ray.

Any suggestions? It is a bit frustrating because the salespeople who sold us the system swore up and down that we had everything we needed and we've already had to go back to the store once as we needed the HDMI cable to attach the receiver to, well, anything.

Connect the HDMI output from the cable AND the Blu-ray player to the HDMI inputs on the Denon (TV and Blu-ray). Then connect the HDMI output on the Denon to the HDMI input on your TV. Now select the source on your Denon, for example Blu-ray. Your Denon acts as the HDMI splitter. Control the volume with the Denon remote.

There's an alternative if your TV has audio output (usually RCA or optical). You could connect the TV audio out to the audio input of your Denon. Leave the cable box and Blu-ray connected to the TV inputs. This would allow you to use your TV with or without going through the AV receiver, and also use the TV remote to control the volume and inputs.
