unable to format 500Gb Toshiba external hard drive

Hi I have a external hard drive toshiba canvio 500Gb and I'm having a problem formatting it. Every time i tried to format it windows will say unable to format. I tried also on the disk management but still no luck.
Can anyone help me out how to fix my hard drive. Thanks and more power...

Do you get any other message or messages when you right click on the drive to format it ?

No more other message, just windows was unable to complete the format.

It is my opinion that the external drive is faulty which is the cause of it not formatting so you might as well throw it in the trash.

I tried to format it using the XFAT file system and was able to complete the format without any interruptions. However i need it to be in NTFS file system because XP does not recognize it, would you think there is still a chance to use it in NTFS?

if hard drive can't be formatted by system, then there must be physical damage with it. you need to find a professional recovery center to get it repaired
