Windows XP Pro SP2 install, restarts and stays on load screen with pro

I just reinstalled windows xp pro from CD after my machine stopped loading windows by exhibiting the same problem. I initailly tried a restore but to no avail. So, I opted for a fresh reinstall.

Got SP1 loaded and SP2 will install but as I mention, just stays on the XP screen and the loading bar just keeps spinning.

Can anyone help?

Time consuming, but try installing again then install SP1 and go directly to SP3, skip SP2 as SP3 has all the SP2 updates included.
