i have purchased a MSI N560GTX-TI twin frozer ii graphics card and it says on the back of the box minimum psu 500w, my psu is 550w, after installing all recent drivers for it i went to play a game and when it loaded the pc turned off, i know it is not a temp problem as it never goes over 40c nor does the cpu,also i have disabled the onboard gpu, i was thinking it could be the psu do i need a more powerfull one?

Not all brands of PSU are actually capable of producing the output that they claim so please provide the brand and model name or number of the present PSU so that we can check compatibility.

The present PSU must be capable of providing the following;

Two 6-pin PCI Express supplementary power connectors.

Minimum 500W or greater system power supply (with a minimum 12V current rating of 30A)

An inadequate amperes (amps) rating and forgetting/not having the necessary supplemental power dongles are a common cause of an issue such as this.
