Yesterday, my brother noticed that Windows Movie Maker was glitching. I went online and ran a microsoft fixit scan, which stated that my jascript.dll (and another dll file starting with or containing a 'v'), windows media player and windows library were corrupted. I used the "fix" option. Windows Movie Maker still didn't work, so I scanned with fix it again to see if the 'fix' worked. I got the same results, which makes me believe malware may be involved. Maybe jscript dll is a virus posing as jscript dll? I don't know. So I ran a system restore, to be on the safe side. It failed. I undid the restore and tried restoring it to a different restore point. It failed. I tried to undo the restore, apparently that failed. I got a prompt that said something like "System restore was not successful. Failed to replace RoxioNow with it's original version". I never use RoxioNow, so I'm not sad that it's lost. However, I am worried that this means other files may have been damaged in this failed attempt to restore my PC, and I am worried that a virus of some kind is attacking it.
Thanks in advance for any advice. I would like to advise you that I do not have a printer, in case a method would require one. Hopefully we can figure it out.

When I ran the fix, it just immediately rebooted. No log was created. Maybe I did it wrong? Should I do it again?
I did notice, however, that two "Desktop.ini" files appeared on my desktop. I can post their contents.

Here's the adw log

So sorry for the late response, I have been unable to access my computer until now. I am currently scanning with the Kaspersky scanner, as instructed. The estimated "finish in" time period is changing between 6-8 hours here and there, I don't know if that's normal. I will post the results once the scanning process is complete.

I'm not sure I did this right. It's been scanning for 9 hours, and it's said Finish In 3 hours for the past four hours.
My PC is getting very warm.
Not sure how important this is, but a few files appear in the scan as "password protected" and "locked". I'll keep you updated.

OK. this usually takes 4 - 6 hours but if you have many files on your system it could take that long. This is standard antivirus scan and it takes all files on your system into count.

Please let it run and post log after the scan if it finds anything.

I ran the scan. It said "no threats detected", however certain files came up password protected. I'm not sure if that's normal, but I never password protected a file.
I tried saving the log but the window just froze for awhile and wouldn't work.

Don't worry abut password protected files. That's normal.

For now there is no sign of any malware. How is your system now? Problems?

I still have non-working system restore. How can I fix this? I thought it had to be malware related?

Let's try to repair that now.

Download Windows Repair (all in one) from this site

Install the programme then run

Go to step 2 and allow it to run Disc check
Posted Image

Once that is done then go to step 3 and allow it to run SFC

On the Start Repairs tab and click Start button

Leave the preselected items ticked and press Start

Just finished. Not sure if it worked or not. I'm afraid that I do a system restore, it will undo everything this thing did.
And now I have three things that need my attention, according to the flag thing.
One about windows Defender being turned off, one about windows firewall being turned off, and one about how windows can't find an antivirus on my PC. But I use Norton. Is something wrong with Norton, or is this normal?

Hi CunningCorey,

Please DO NOT do system restore. To check our fix just make new restore point. It you can create another restore point then it should all be OK with System restore service. How to create new restore point?

To turn on windows firewall you can read This topic.

To turn on Windows Defender read This page.

and one about how windows can't find an antivirus on my PC. But I use Norton. Is something wrong with Norton, or is this normal?

Sometimes windows does that. Let's try this step:

Click on Start Menu and type CMD in search, from the results right click on Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'.

Type the following command:

winmgmt /verifyrepository

If you get a message "WMI repository is not consistent" , run the following command:

winmgmt /salvagerepository

Restart your machine.

If you still get the alert or get the following message instead:

winmgmt /salvagerepository is failed.

Ignore this message, and again run "winmgmt /salvagerepository"

Let me know results.

It said it's consistent. Anyway, I don't want to take up your time if I don't have to, I know there are others who require more immediate help. Thank you for everything.
If the problem persists, I will seek help in your sites OS forum, one of your members suggested it may be a hard drive issue.
Thanks again! :)

Hi CunningCorey,

Your logs and system are clean now.

Step 1

Please close all running programs and Run OTL
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :OTL

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]
    [resethosts]
    [clearallrestorepoints]
    [Reboot]

  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
Step 2

We need to clean up your PC from programs we used.

Please start OTL one more time and click CleanUp button. OTL will restart your system at the end.

In case that any of the software we used in this fix still remains on your system please delete it manually (Right click on it and select Delete).

General recommendations

Here are some recommendations you should follow to minimize infection risk in the future:

1. Something to read

To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide How did I get infected in the first place ?

2. Make Backups of Important Files

Please read this article Home Computer Data Backup.

3. Regularly update your software

To eliminate design flaws and security vulnerabilities, all software needs to be updated to the latest version or the vendor’s patch installed.

You should download Update Checker from here. The program will automaticly check for newer version of software installed on your system.
