Hello everyone .. I have been here before to fix my work computer and thanks to you all my computer is still working wonderfully!! I am now asking for help in fixing my sons computer which is extremely slow and I don't know why really ..

It is a Dell Microsoft Windows XP, professional Version 2002, Service Pack 3, Intel Pentium® 4CPU 3.00 GHz, 2.99GHz. 512MB of RAM.

He only uses to do research for school, and use Microsoft Office Word 2003. he doesnt really use it to save anything but he was not the origial user of this computer. A friend of mine gave it to him. It is slow and sometimes freezes for about 5 to 10 min. It also loads slowly when it is first turned on.

If anyone can help me I would appreciate it. It may need to have a lot of things deleted and I am ok with that.

Now download Ccleaner Stay away from the registry cleaner please do not run that.

Open ccleaner hit the tools button then the start up button and disable all items except Microsoft security essentials.

Reboot your machine at this point it is needed.




Now please delete the files below from your machine.

To do this please open a command prompt by hitting the windows key and r at the same time then type cmd in the run box.

Once the command prompt open copy and paste each command below seperately hitting enter after each one.

Scroll down to the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controlers Left click the + to the left of the drivers.
Right Click and uninstall all of your Primary IDE drivers there most likely will be more than one of the Primary IDE Drivers Make sure and un-install All of them prior to rebooting.


Then run this .vbs on your machine please right click the link below and select save as and save it to your desktop double click it after saving allow it to run and a request to reboot the machine will be made please do so and check the issue.

Do you mean the "primary IDE Channel"?? That is the only "primary IDE" I see... so I am a bit confused. I also left my printer installed becasue my son uses it and needs it for school.

If you only have one primary ide driver installed yeas right click it and select un-install.
You will be prompted for a reboot please do so and continue the other step.

I just opened my firefox browser to make sure it was running smoother and it is still sticking a bit and I noticed that I get the measuring icon instead of the arrow for about 5 minutes While typing this reply it also froze for a bit also

Download the All in one Repair Tool Run the program vista/win 7 users please right click and run as admin. Go to step 4 and create a backup of your registry this tool involves changing registry keys and it is just a good idea to bak it up.Now go to the start repairs tab and run it with the following boxes checked.When running this tool disable your antivirus.

Reboot the machine after this if it does not do so on its own.

For now un-install Microsoft security essentials.
Reboot and then run the tool.
I highly suggest that you switch to Avast,after running the tool.
As MSE is not as good in detection and has been known to slow the internet.

Hi ... I d/l the avast installed it and uninstalled the MS but I remember one of the guys who helped me clean my work computer from viruses and helped me uninstall and reinstall new drive from this site recommended MS .. so I am a bit confused. I mean my other computer has a much larger storage and RAM and this one doesn't .. is that the reason?

Also as I posted this reply it took my computer a minute or two to post or do anything cuz I got the measuring cup icon again. Do I need to uninstall anything else and free more space in my computer? i also still cant do a disk clean .. once I run the disk clean and click on the little boxes and then click on OK it just freezes and does nothing. I have even let it sit to see if it cleans and 5 hours later is still frozen and does not clean. i hope I am explaining myself correctly and not confusing you.
