Hello,

I've had a tower running on Windows 7 with quite a lot of data that I want kept (approx 400gb), but have recently changed to a laptop on Windows 8 so I took the hard disk out of the tower and put in an external enclosure (SATA to USB) thinking that I would be able to access the stuff I want on the hard disk and copy it across to the laptop. But although the hdd enclosure lights up to show its on (and presumably working) the laptop doesn't seem to find it at all. Is there something I should be doing that I haven't? Or is what I'm trying not possible?

Any help would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Download this to your laptop and then run it on whatever the drive letter is for the external.
