Hi. :)

no just this one

Strange that then as no indication your machine is the source for this, feasible it may have been a problem with the forum software itself but I'm afraid I know nothing about that side of things.

I suggest you change your password for this forum as a precaution though if not already done so since you were only allocated a temp' one. How to do so can be done via

My Settings >> Change Password

never got an installation disk with my comp

there a problem?

Fair enough, I merely inquired so we could use it to implement some repairs. Not a problem though as we will merely use a different methodology to do so as follows...

Vista Startup Repair:

  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until Advanced Boot Options menu appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Repair your computer menu item.
  • At the the System Recovery Options screen Select United Kingdom as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next and OK.
  • Now click on Startup Repair
  • You should now see the Searching for Problems...
  • Note: If given the option to Perform a System Restore, do not select and cancel the option.
  • If problems found let Startup Repair complete and follow the prompts.
  • Once complete click on Finish >> Restart.
Vista System File Check:

  • Click on Start(Vista Orb).
  • Click on All Programs >> Accessories
  • Right click on Command Prompt and select Run as Administrator.
  • Click on Continue in the UAC prompt.
  • At the Command Prompt C:\Windows\System32> type in the following exactly:
  • cd c:\
  • Then depress the Enter/Return key, then type in the following exactly:
  • sfc /scannow
  • Then depress the Enter/Return key.
Note: This may take awhile to finish. When completed close the Administrator Command Prompt window, via typing Exit then depress the Enter/Return key.

Next:

Let myself know when completed the above, if Startup Repair found/fixed anything and try the Mozilla FireFox browser etc.

Hi. :)

how do I find my settings? I searched and cant find them

when I did what you suggested I got the screenshot below. took the comp once into a comp shop and he reformatted the hard drive to get rid of a virus, is there a problem?

Do you mean you are actually unable to boot your machine into the Advanced Boot Options and or if able that particular screen then appears ?

I have to say was not expecting that one and it appears to be a specific partition on your machine that is invoked whilst trying to enter Advanced Boot Options I am surmising:-

D: is FIXED (NTFS) - 10 GiB total, 3.888 GiB free.

OK we may be able to work around that, just answer my above query in your next reply please.

did the final thing. It found something but when I went to log to send it you access was denied

Reboot your machine if you have not already done so and lets check if we can retrieve the log as follows...

SFC Log-Retrieval:

  • Open Notepad.
  • Copy and Paste everything from the Quote Box(do not copy the word quote) below into Notepad:

@echo off
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt
del %0

  • Go to File >> Save As
  • Save File name as Dakeyras.bat
  • Change Save as Type to All Files and save the file to your Desktop.
  • It should look similiar to this: Posted Image
Now right-click on the desktop Dakeyras.bat and select Run as Administrator to run the batch file.

It will self-delete when completed and there should now be a notepad file on the desktop named sfcdetails.txt, post the contents of the aforementioned file in your next reply.

Note: In the event it is too large to post conventionally merely add it as a attachment.

Scan with WVCheck:

Please download WVCheck and save it to the desktop.

  • Right-click on WVCheck.exe and select Run as Administrator >> follow the prompts.
  • The scan may take some time depending on the Hard-Drive size etc.
  • Please post the contents of the notepad file WVCheck_nnnn_dd-mm-yyyy that can be located on the desktop in your next reply.

Hi. :)

I can boot but when I click on recovery I get that screen

OK, that poses a problem then and you may have to call the computer shop and explain the situation and ask how that can be bypassed.

For now though lets see if we can work around this and actually create a stand alone Startup Repair Disk that can be used to boot your machine up with and implement the repairs as follows...

Create a Vista SP2 System Repair Disc

Note: the below can only be done if your machine has a a type of CD/R or DVD/R optical drive installed.

Please download recdisc_x86.zip and save this to your Desktop.

Then extract recdisc.exe to your Desktop.

  • Using Windows Explorer (right-click on Start(Vista Orb) >> Explore) navigate to this file:-
C:\Windows\System32\recdisc.exe <-- Leave the System32 windows open as you will be going back to this shortly.

  • Now right click on the desktop recdisc.exe and select Properties >> click on the Unblock >> Apply >> OK
Note: if there is no Unblock tab then the file is already unblocked and merely proceed to the below.

  • Now right click on C:\Windows\System32\recdisc.exe >> Properties >> Security >> Advanced.
  • Then click on the Edit.. tab >> allow the UAC prompt. Click once on your User account to highlight.
  • In your case it should be Users (Chris\Users) >> Advanced >> Owner >> Edit.. >> Allow the UAC prompt.
  • Click once on Users (Chris\Users) to highlight >> Apply >> OK >> follow the prompts.
  • Now drag and drop the Desktop File recdisc.exe into a blank area of the System32 Window >> Allow the UAC prompt >> Move and Replace
Next:

  • Now right click on C:\Windows\System32\recdisc.exe and select Run as Administrator
  • Allow the UAC(User Account Control) prompt via selecting Allow.
  • You should now see a menu like the below:-
Posted Image

  • Put a blank rewritable CD/DVD in your optical(CD/DVD) drive and then click on Create disc.
  • Note: If a AutoPlay window pops up, just close it.
  • If prompted with the below:-
Posted Image

  • Remove the blank rewritable CD/DVD and replace with the Vista CD/DVD you do have and you should see the below:-
Posted Image

  • When prompted with the below:-
Posted Image

  • Remove your Vista CD/DVD and replace with a blank rewritable CD/DVD and click on OK.
  • When the SRD has been created you will see the below:-
Posted Image

  • Now click on Close >> OK. Leave the disc in the drive as we will be using it shortly.
Note: You now have a Vista System Repair Disc.

Vista Startup Repair:

  • Bootup your computer from the Recovery Disk we have just created.
  • If not sure how to, a very good tutorial can be read here
  • You will have to answer a few basic questions then select the option Repair your computer
  • At the the System Recovery Options screen click Windows Vista to highlight then Next>
  • You should now see the Searching for Problems...
  • Note: If given the option to Perform a System Restore, do not select and cancel the option.
  • If problems found let Startup Repair complete and follow the prompts.
Next:

Let myself know when completed the above and or if any problems encountered, if Startup Repair found/fixed anything and try the Mozilla FireFox browser etc.

Hi. :)

the shop has shut down now, they did that as I didnt have windows start up and so could set up a d: partion

That's a pity, though going from the telephone number displayed on the screen-shot you posted it appears this may be part of the same firm possibly.

is there a problem with my computer?

We just need to perform some basic repairs, nothing malicious though and the prior running of SFC has helped the overall situation far as I can ascertain.

I`ll try and do the disk

Acknowledged.

Not to worry if no UAC prompts longs as what is required is accomplished...

As for a specific blank area, not a problem merely drag and drop the desktop recdisc.exe anywhere in the left hand side of the system32 window were all the files/folders are showing and you should be prompted to Move and Replace etc.

Not a problem.

you mean drag onto one of the screenshots I sent you

No actually into the open System32 Window...OK try moving the file this way instead:-

  • Right click on Start(Vista Orb) >> Explore >> Desktop >> now click once on recdisc.exe to highlight.
  • Depress the Alt key and a extra toolbar menu will appear >> click on Edit >> Move To Folder...
  • In the Move Items window that appears >> click on Local Disk (C:) >> Windows >> System32 >> Move
  • Now click on Move and Replace >> the file should now have been moved and replaced the original etc.

Hi. :)

I get destination denied I need permission to perform this action

Did you have a problem performing the instructions in post #36 ? If so try again and or if have not done so please do then try moving the desktop file again etc.

This is for the file in the System32 Folder not the one on the Desktop

  • Right click on C:\Windows\System32\recdisc.exe >> Properties >> Security >> Advanced.
  • Then click on the Edit.. tab >> allow the UAC prompt if asked. Click once on your User account to highlight.
  • In your case it should be Users (Chris\Users) >> Advanced >> Owner >> Edit.. >> Allow the UAC prompt if asked.
  • Click once on Users (Chris\Users) to highlight >> Apply >> OK >> follow the prompts.
