An issue was identified last night on a family computer. Not sure where we got the virus, but symptoms are clear (have seen exact same symptoms resolved eelsewhere on these forums): when an internet search (using Yahoo! or Google, for example) is done, the search returns results, and the URLs load in the ppreview pane, but when any link is clicked, you ae redirected to a website (something like livesearchnow.com and another site with an IP address of 8.26.70.252.

McCafee is enabled on the machine. I downloaded and installed MBAM (Malewarebytes Anti-Malware), ran the quick scan, which found something, but did not resolve the issue. Have run OTL scanner, results posted below.

Thanks in advance.

Hello dogstar21 and welcome to Geeks To Go !!

My name is Crowbar and I'll be the malware removal Geek that will be helping you remove any infections you may have on your computer.

  • Please read all of my response through at least once before attempting to follow the procedures described.
  • Please save my instructions as a text file on your desktop, or print them out, as you may not be able to access this thread at times.
  • Please follow the steps exactly as written, in the same order.
  • If there's anything you don't understand or isn't totally clear, please ask me any questions that you may have.
  • Please do not attach any log files to your replies unless I specifically ask you. Instead please copy and paste so as to include the log in your reply. You can do this in separate posts if it's easier for you.
  • This process is not an instant process - please stick with me until I tell you that your machine is clean. If you don't see any symptoms it does not mean your system is clear of malware
  • Please don't run any other scans or other software unless I ask you to, as it will make this repair more difficult.

Can you please post the Malwarebytes log file?
you can find it by starting Malwarebytes, and clicking on the Logs tab.
Highlight the most recent log and click the Open button.
The log file will open in Notepad, please copy and paste that information in your next post.

Please post the Extras.txt file too, it should be in the same folder that you ran OTL from, which is C:\Users\Alison\Documents\Anti Vir

Please do that while I examine your log file.

Hello,
I really don't like to see this:

Error - 12/25/2012 10:56:41 AM | Computer Name = LaptopofAlison | Source = Disk | ID = 262155
Description = The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk1\DR1.

so lets see if a disk check will clear this up, before we continue.

Open Computer by clicking the Start button Posted Image, and then clicking Computer.

Right-click the hard disk drive that you want to check, and then click Properties.
Click the Tools tab, and then, under Error-checking, click Check Now. Posted Image If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.
select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors.
Click Start.
you'll be prompted to reschedule the disk check for the next time you restart your computer.
Restart your computer and wait while the disk check runs. It could take a long time, perhaps you want it to run overnight, but make sure its starts the check before retiring.

Step 1
We need to do an OTL fix:
but before you do that, please delete the copy of OTL you have now, which is currently at C:\Users\Alison\Documents\Anti Vir and re-download it from here making sure you download it to your desktop
Note: If you have Malwarebytes 1.6 or higher installed please disable it for the duration of this fix as it may interfere with the successfully execution of the script below. If it still hangs then please uninstall MalwareBytes' and run this fix again.
Run OTL by right clicking on the OTL icon and selecting Run as Administrator
  • Under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom, paste in the following

    :commands
    [createrestorepoint]
    :OTL
    O4 - HKCU..\Run: [Temp] C:\Users\Alison\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Temp\jhpchrtuq.dll ()

    O16:64bit: - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0022-ABCDEFFEDCBA} http://java.sun.com/...indows-i586.cab (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_22)
    O16:64bit: - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-ABCDEFFEDCBA} http://java.sun.com/...indows-i586.cab (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_22)
    :commands
    [emptytemp]
    [Reboot]
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Post the log it produces in your next reply.

Step 2
Download AdwCleaner from here to your desktop
Run AdwCleaner and select Delete

Posted Image

Once done it will ask to reboot, allow this
On reboot a log will be produced at C:\ADWCleaner[XX].txt please attach that

Step 3

  • Download RogueKiller and save it on your desktop.
  • Quit all programs
  • Start RogueKiller.exe.
  • Wait until Prescan has finished ...
  • Click on Scan

Posted Image

  • Wait for the end of the scan.
  • The report has been created on the desktop.

Please post: All RKreport.txt text files located on your desktop.

In your next reply I would like to see:
  • OTL fix log
  • any RKreport.txt files you see on your desktop
  • ADWcleaner log file
  • are the redirects still there? in all browsers?

Crowbar, i can't get the disk check, to run. I schedule the disk check to run at next start (it won't allow me to run it immediately), and when i restart (also tried shutting down fully and starting, not that it should matter) - the disk check pops up briefly - for maybe 1 second i see a message "A disk check has been scheduled." Followed almost immediately by a message "Disk Check has been cancelled" (it wasn't until the 3rd time i tried that i was able to see this message, as it flashes so quickly). It's clearly not performing the disk check.

Do you want me to continue and do your steps 1-3 (OTL custom script, adWareCleaner, and RogueKiller), or do we need to do something else before we proceed?

I thought that might happen - there is a fix for that. Please continue on with my other steps, and I will prepare a fix for the disk issue.

Do i delete the files in RogueKiller? I ran the scan, but when i clicked to exit, RogueKiller prompted me with the following:

"No items have been deleted. Do you really want to quit?"

My guess is that i should delete them, but wanted to hear from you before i did (i'm posting on a different machine than the one with the issue - RogueKiller is still up). Other software ran fine, i'll post the logs when you let me know what to do with RogueKiller.

Thanks.

No, you are doing it right, don't delete. I just want to see the log file first before you remove anything. Better to be safe.

And now the good news: the redirects are gone!

Thanks. (guessing we have clean-up stuff to do, and possibly something related to that check disk issue)

Great news about the redirects, I believe the culprit was hiding in a temporary folder, and when the OTL fix emptied the temp folders, bye bye bad guys!
I want to confirm that it's really gone...

Here is the OTL Log:

All processes killed
Error: Unable to interpret <:commands[createrestorepoint]:OTLO4 - HKCU..\Run: [Temp] C:\Users\Alison\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Temp\jhpchrtuq.dll ()O16:64bit: - DPF: {8AD9C840-044E-11D1-B3E9-00805F499D93} http://java.sun.com/...indows-i586.cab (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_22)O16:64bit: - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-0016-0000-0022-ABCDEFFEDCBA} http://java.sun.com/...indows-i586.cab (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_22)O16:64bit: - DPF: {CAFEEFAC-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-ABCDEFFEDCBA} http://java.sun.com/...indows-i586.cab (Java Plug-in 1.6.0_22):commands[emptytemp][Reboot]> in the current context!

There was a problem with copying and pasting in the OTL fix, so lets try that again, but a little bit differently this time.
I have attached a file Fix.txt, please download this file to your desktop (where OTL should be located) before starting below
Look to the bottom of this post to find the file

Step 1
We need to do an OTL fix:

Note: If you have Malwarebytes 1.6 or higher installed please disable it for the duration of this fix as it may interfere with the successfully execution of the script below. If it still hangs then please uninstall MalwareBytes' and run this fix again.
Run OTL by right clicking on the OTL icon and selecting Run as Administrator
then click the Run Fix button at the top
Select the Fix.txt file you downloaded to your desktop
  • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
  • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
  • Post the log it produces in your next reply.

Step 2
  • Download RogueKiller and save it on your desktop.
  • Quit all programs
  • Start RogueKiller.exe.
  • Wait until Prescan has finished ...
  • Click on Scan

Posted Image

  • Wait for the end of the scan.
  • The report has been created on the desktop.
  • Click on the Delete button.

Posted Image

  • The report has been created on the desktop.

  • Next click on the ShortcutsFix
Posted Image
  • The report has been created on the desktop.

Please post: All RKreport.txt text files located on your desktop.

Step 3
OTL quick scan
  • Double click on the OTL icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed and to let it run uninterrupted.
  • Click the Quick Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.
  • When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
  • Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time and post them in your topic

In your next reply I would like to see:
  • OTL fix log
  • All RKreport.txt files (there will be a few of them)
  • Fresh OTL scan (there won't be a new extras.txt so don't worry about that part.

Ok, looks like we got it out of there for good.

Step 1
This is for your chkdsk issue -
Please visit this page here
Download the hotfix by clicking on the Green box Hotfix Download Available.

on the download page, put a check in the box under step 1
then enter your email address to have the fix sent to you.

You should receive the hotfix in an email within a few minutes.
Please run this hotfix then try chkdsk once again, following the instructions in my post #4
You only need to follow the chkdsk instructions in that post, not the rest of it.

Step 2
Posted Image Please run Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

  • Go to the Update tab and check for updates, please install any updates found.

Step 3
Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this Scan.

You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically. The scan may take several hours.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: Posted Image
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files (x86)/ESET/ESET Online Scanner\log.txt

Was unable to install the hotfix - i downloaded, but when i tried to execute the package, i got an error message that it wasn't compatible for this computer. Tried to do check disk again, with no change (not unexpected since the hotfix didn't take).

I ran a MBAM quick scan - ran clean, here's the log:

Internet Explorer 9.0.8112.16421

Ran the ESET scanner after disabling McAfee. The scan didn't detect anything - the log file didn't have much meat to it:

ESETSmartInstaller@High as CAB hook log:
OnlineScanner64.ocx - registred OK
OnlineScanner.ocx - registred OK
-------------------------------

From the ESET scan window (not the log):

No threats found
Scanned Files: 168402
Infected files: 0

Everything seems to be running fine on the machine. Thanks.

Strange about the hotfix - I downloaded it and it started on my 64 bit win 7 computer.
I am attaching a copy to this post, please try that one.
Extract the file from the zip folder, and put it on your desktop.
Double click on the .msu file to run it.

Let me know if that works, then we can move on to the cleanup.
