What is your budget and what type of gaming? The gaming part is going to drive the cost up, since you will likely need a discrete graphics card.

What is the aversion to Alienware? You know they are owned by Dell now, and their 14" gaming laptop comes in at ~$900, which could be what you are going to pay for something else as customized, depending about what you are planning on playing.

Maybe an HP; regardless, you are going to have to go high end in order to do gaming, even though I still don't know what you play.
