It takes a special program to read a dump file. I'll look at it in a minute.

Your PC is running a bit hot for a desktop.
ASUSTeK Computer INC. A7N8X-LA (Socket A) 50 °C

As old as it is I would expect it to be clogged with dust. Leave it plugged up but shut it down then remove the cover. Clean out all of the dust with a vacuum cleaner hose and a small brush. Pay special attention to the CPU heatsink and the vents on the front. Turn it on and see if the fan starts up right away. If it is slow starting or makes noise then it needs to be replaced. Once you clean it out, run it for 30 minutes and then run speccy again and see if the temperature has gone down any.

I wonder why speccy says the computer has 2 GB RAM but when I right click on My Computer- Properties it shows 1.43GB. I put some chips in years ago and don't remember what I added. The computer came with only 512MB

Excess heat can cause strange failures.

Speccy is correct. Some of your RAM is reserved for the video and not available to Windows.

The dmp file just says it's a bad driver. It blames ntoskrnl.exe but that's unlikely to be bad. More likely we have a driver issue. Boot into Safe Mode and see if it still reboots after 20 minutes. (Reboot and when you see the maker's logo, hear a beep or it talks about F8, start tapping the F8 key slowly. Keep tapping until the Safe Mode Menu appears and choose Safe Mode with Networking. Login with your usual login.)

I took the computer to the kitchen table about a week ago before I reinstalled windows and cleaned out all the dust everywhere, and there was a good bit, even though I have cleaned it several times since I have had it.
I swapped slots with the two memory chips at that time. I did run the computer while I had it on the table with the case open and watched it. The fan came on immediately, had a good output of air and didn't made an unreasonable amount of noise.

Just now I let the computer run in safe mode for about and hour and it didn't reboot itself.

I ran speccy again. When it finished I watched the temperature speccy show the ASUSTeK Computer INC. A7N8X-LA (Socket A) show the temp and it ranged from 43 C to 47 C and the hard drive was steady at 37 C

Here's the speccy log

OK. Since it's working in Safe Mode let's see if msconfig can help;

Start, Run, msconfig , OK then Under Startup Uncheck everything. Switch to the Services Tab and first check the Hide Microsoft services box. then Uncheck all that remain. Apply and reboot into normal mode. Cancel msconfig when it comes up. Let it cook for a while and let's see if it reboots. If it doesn't then one of the things we unchecked was the problem. In that case go back in to msconfig and check all of the Services items that you had unchecked and then Apply and reboot. if it doesn't reboot then one of the Startup items is at fault. If it does then one of the services is at fault. Uncheck half of the services, Apply and reboot. Keep going until you isolate it to a single item.

If it doesn't help then try unhiding the microsoft services and uncheck them too.

If msconfig doesn't stop it from rebooting then it's probably the video driver so try the latest from HP (They call it Graphics):

Hello Ron

Last night after I rebooted into safe mode and it didn't reboot itself after running for more than an hour, I went back to normal mode and ran it for about an hour and it DID NOT do that reboot itself cycle.

This morning I opened 5 browsers and let it run for 90 minutes and it hasn't rebooted itself, so I didn't go through the Services check you requested. I ran speccy twice to check the motherboard temp after the 90 minute run. I could see on the speccy screen that the temp was varying between 41 and 44 C. I brought up the log file and neither file showed the motherboard temp, but showed the HD at 37C. (Seems it is always 37C) Any reason why the motherboard temp didn't show.

Could it be that you have brought this computer back from the dead, clean of viruses and corrupted files????

If you think we need to run any more checks, I certainly will do so.

Here is the speccy report I ran right after 90 minutes of running without a reboot in normal mode. Right now with one browser running the temp is varying between 40 and 44C

Well I see the temp in this printout. Didn't see it looking at it on desktop. 41 is good, isn't it. Wonder if the 50 C readings had to do with it constantly rebooting itself.

I don't know of anything we have done to make it work. The lower temp is the only thing I can think of. There is another program called speedfan which gives you an instant temp reading and is a bit easier to work with. http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php
Download, save and Install it (Win 7 or Vista right click and Run As Admin.) then run it. Uninstall Speccy so it doesn't run in the background. The temps that Speccy and Speedfan can measure depend on the design of the motherboard. Some of the older models didn't bother with all of the possible temp sensors.

It's possible that your CPU temp would be cooler with a new coat of thermal paste between the CPU and the heatsink. Arctic Silver has a good rep:

Your hard drive was corrupt. Running Check Disk fixed it for now but this could be a sign of future failure so make sure you back up any data you don't want to lose. This is also a possible reason for the blue screens. I've also seen hard drive corruption caused by bad RAM so you might want to burn a CD with memtest86 + http://www.memtest.org/ and run it for several passes to make sure the RAM is good.

I have been trying for hours to figure out how to download memtest and make an iso disk. I made the disk on my windows 7 computer because I don't have a cd burning program on this xp, but I haven't run it yet on the xp. I now have a virus on the XP

I tried to download power2go from cnet but when I tried to install it, it said it couldn't finish because
I did not have SP 1 on my computer, which is correct, because when I reinstalled windows, I went straight to installing SP 1 and SP 2. Should I go back and install 1 and 2? Would I have to install SP 3 to do so?

When I came back to the xp to run the memtest disk, I see that Imnent virus has been installed on my xp. Wow, I have only been to CNET and the site to download memtest and the Cyberlink home page to download Power2go.
Looking at my browser history the first instance of IMnent is right after the download from CNET. I thought CNET would be safe. They say to download their installer that makes sure the file you are downloading is safe. Am I missing something here? I did notice that while I was trying to install the Power2go AVG found and internal installer threat which I told it to remove, which AVG said it did.

Should I run AVG and MBAM and Superantispyware to remove it or something else??

Sorry for all the trouble,
Thank you

Correction-- when I reinstalled windows I skipped SP 1&2 and installed SP3 directly which I read you could do but it would be better to 1&2 first. Should have done 1d&2 first I guess

I just noticed that Speedfan must have installed current temperature measurements in my taskbar, bottom right, showing, I suppose, current temps of 67C 1C 1C 37C

No need for SP1 and 2 if you have 3.

It's best not to let the download sites give you anything but what you want. They love to give you adware or "sponsored" programs. Adobe.com and Java.com do the same thing.

Run OTl quickscan and we can probably remove it.

The best way to burn an iso file is with free iso burner. It's pretty easy to use and doesn't have any baggage.

I should warn you we will be off island tomorrow and won't get back until very late. We are going on a bus trip to Mt Baker to try snowshoes. Have to take the early ferry so won't be on line until late in the evening.

I don't like the sound of 67C. That means something is not right on a desktop. Probably time for Arctic Silver or a new fan if you are sure it has no dust and it is not sitting next to the radiator or in direct sunlight or on a soft surface.

We have an Island off the coast of NC between Wilmington and Myrtle Beach, Bald Head Island, similar, in that you have to take ferry. No autos allowed on Island. Very beautiful place. Big houses, plenty alligators, Great golf course. Just a little trouble to get out there.
