I have a Compaq Presario, family desktop, Running windows 7. It first runs normally for a while, then shutsdown by itself. I have no idea whats causing these random shutdowns. It does not happen frequently. It done this today in the morning. I will do a disk check

Update

when starting up computer it says

a disk error has occurred

press Ctrl Alt and delete to restart.

Hello mavriklu

Back up any important data on the HDD asap as the drive may fail mechanically if you see this message, when done test your HDD, see below;

Run the HDDs diagnostics tool;

Make sure you select the tool that is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive http://www.tacktech....ay.cfm?ttid=287
Depending on the program it'll create a bootable floppy or a bootable CD.
If the downloaded file is the .iso type use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn the .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option) and make the CD bootable.

Let us know the results please.

There's not allot of data on my Hard Drive anyway,

  • mostly its all pics
  • and other documents.

All pics and documents were already backed up, saved on a cd. Is this a Western Digital hard drive?

Hello mavriklu

It does not look too promising atm but see if you can run the extended test please as the results are more conclusive, if the test will not run it suggests that the HDD is bad I`m afraid.

thanks for helping out phillpower2.

I may end up replacing the hard drive, but money is kind of tight, so I can't afford a new hard drive at the moment.
