Turned on my Sony vaio pcg-21314w netbook this morning to the following:
Disk read error
please press ctrl alt delete to restart
I did this numerous times to no avail.
Someone please help. I have worked a few
weeks without backing anything up. It is not even 3 years old.

Hello Lee and welcome to the forum.

It sounds to me like your hard drive is dead mate, can you reboot and continually tap F8 to get into Safe Mode as soon as it does please and then get back to us.

Am in process of rescuing files, as I could not get safe mode to come up...perhaps it is a different F key, as I bought this in Oman? Shall I try safe mode after I rescue and save files? Or just reformat? Getting different advice from different people, so I am a bit confused now with what to do next.

Go with the forum where you are receiving the most answers Lee as I would not want to confuse the issue.

I meant I am getting advice from family and friends and am not sure they have a clue. I think you are my best shot, bar taking it to some shop.

How are you managing to rescue files if the Sony will not boot up?
