Is this the USA equivalent to the window7?

This is a OEM version of the OS which is no different then a retail version with the exception of the following.
It has none of the books, pamphlets or instructions
It is just the cd but has he same exact OS as the retail.
Usually on a OEM version once it is installed it is married to that system. If you change a main component of that system you will have to reactivate the OS.

Just to clarify an aspect of the "main component" here, what we are talking about is the motherboard.

If you ever fancy upgrading your board even though there is nothing wrong with the one you have then you will have to buy a new OEM System Builder disk as MS view this then as a "New Computer".

However if the board fails and you replace it then notify MS and tell them what happened they will reactivate the system.

Correct adding a new hd is not a main component and you have that right even with a new system.

hey Ron, i since we talked i did a download of lm14 and have been running off that for a about a week. Today i was playing with the disk, and noticed that one this machine i'm able to the 640 wd drive. the only options i'm provided with are to format the drive, create a disk image, retore disk image, and benchmark volume.

Do you think that since i've giving up on reusing the OEM windows that i could reformat the drive and get it running linux?

If you want to run nothing but Linux then you can format and install Linux only if you wish to.

Yeah this I'd gonna be my new play system. Should I partition the drive incase I want to put Windows 7 later?

If you have any plans of installing Win7 later then yes I would suggest a 40 or 50 gig partition for it.

Just remember if the HD is bad it won't matter what OS you put on it at this point.

@ flyboy,if the HDD is bad and you are going to have to get another HDD, and if you have data which you would like to have or try to retreive from the damaged HDD,i have an option to do so if interested... This method does have some exceptions..

Yeah I got that the Hdd is fired and this wasn't my computer so I don't need to save the data. Thanks for posting though.



Also I want to update this. The hdd seems to be working now. Since I loaded Linux on it, I have been able to shut down and restart. Also I looked at the partitions and I have to other partitions which is supposed to be where the gateway backups are.
