Grand, doing some research on this we have two options... Spend a lot of hours locating the files, amending the registry, taking ownership etc.. One small error and we will need to start again Or the simple way do a repair install total time about 20 minutes :)

There is a repair tutorial here have a read of it and see if you are agreeable, if so we will do that

Thanks. Just read tutorial. Disc does include Service Pack 1. A bit bothered about losing files? Not backed up and lots of photos. Can these all be lost? Although some stuff well over my head am happy to go for it! Only alternative is to await son in law if he can help me this evening. Over to you for advice!

The beauty of this is that it just replaces the windows files, and leaves all others as they were

Any that have lost the necessary permissions I can help you reset with a small programme (that would be useful to keep installed)

http://www.geekstogo...install-either/

hello link here to my original thread, unfortunately i didnt note down exact error msg

when it failed it wasnt terminal (in that pc was as before once it had restarted)

just looked at the tutorial first few lines of warnings, im thinking this maybe a problem

computer was bought from ginger6 and had windows 7 pre-installed pretty sure the disk was sent along with pc though, would it not even try a repair if it was the wrong type of disk?

im unsure whether this stops us trying the repair option? would ask that my mother in law double checks we are using the correct windows 7 disk as well

as also bought her a laptop recently that had windows 7 pre-installed, and discs may have got mixed up?

In that case you can download a windows 7 with SP1 ISO from here this is a legitimate download but you will need your windows key.. Normally on the side of the computer

You can use the windows tool to burn the ISO to a USB or DVD details =General%20Tips"]here

Just so you know where we are, son in law h ere
Download is progressing but broadband speed not great so taking a while
Just to clarify where will the ISo file be created, mother in law is downloading the MS file to deskTop but does it create the Iso file in desktop where it is downloaded or can you specify where during the install where you put the iso?
Just want to know where so mammar can do the burning stuff as that seems pretty straightforward
Will probably conclude the disk burning tomorrow so will be a hiatus for a day or so
Many thanksJust noticed when I looked at my history it was you who helped me with own pc so muchos gracios

When you download the ISO you can specify the location.. I always use the desktop rather than the downloads folder as it is easy to find
