Hello, recently I encountered an extension for Chrome called InfoAtoms. I also experienced a redirect to an apparently unsavory search engine which I can't recall the name of (I'm sorry - stress), though it only happened once. I believe InfoAtoms to have been installed either via CNET, or from a .pdf torrent I recently downloaded.

I've performed a scan with Avira Free Antivirus, which came up clean, and a full scan with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware. Malwarebytes initially removed PUP.InfoAtoms, but after restarting, I noticed that it was still in my list of extensions. I manually removed it and it hasn't appeared since then. Symptoms of InfoAtoms were irrelevant pop-up boxes in my browser when I moused over links (exact memory is fuzzy...).

At the moment I can find nothing overtly wrong with my system, (edit-) though things on the internet load slower, such as connecting to Google messenger or submitting this post. I would really appreciate peace of mind if someone could affirm that things are clean. For the most part I've been hesitant to use my system at all since this incident. Thanks in advance. Here is my OTL log:

Please note that all instructions given are customised for this computer only, the tools used may cause damage if used on a computer with different infections.

If you think you have similar problems, please post the appropriate logs in the Malware Removal forum and wait for help.

Hi and welcome to Geeks to Go. :)

I'm Dakeyras and I am going to try to assist you with your problem. Please take note of the below:

  • I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine!
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
  • Refrain from running self fixes as this will hinder the malware removal process.
  • It may prove beneficial if you print of the following instructions or save them to notepad as I post them.
  • Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
Before we start:

Please be aware that removing Malware is a potentially hazardous undertaking. I will take care not to knowingly suggest courses of action that might damage your computer. However it is impossible for me to foresee all interactions that may happen between the software on your computer and those we'll use to clear you of infection, and I cannot guarantee the safety of your system. It is possible that we might encounter situations where the only recourse is to re-format and re-install your operating system, or to necessitate you taking your computer to a repair shop.

Because of this, I advise you to backup any personal files and folders before you start.

Backup the Registry:

Modifying the Registry can create unforeseen problems, so it always wise to create a backup before doing so.

  • Please download the installer for Registry Backup from here or here and save to your desktop.
  • Right-click on tweaking.com_registry_backup_setup.exe and select Run as Administrator >> Follow the prompts for a default installation
  • Ensure the option Open "Tweaking.com - Registry Backup" When Install Completes is selected >> Next > >> Finish
  • Once the GUI(graphical user interface) has appeared/loaded:-
Posted Image

  • Click on Backup Now >> once the process is complete the below will be displayed in the GUI:-
Posted Image

  • Close Tweaking.com - Registry Backup
Note: There will now be a folder at the root of the Hard-Drive named C:\RegBackup, do not delete this as it is the actual backup just created.

Scan with AdwCleaner:

Please download adwcleaner from here and save to your desktop.

Alternate downloads are here or here.

  • Right-click on adwcleaner.exe and select Run as Administrator to launch the application.
  • Now click on the Delete tab >> reboot your machine if not prompted.
  • Please post the contents of the log-file created in your next post.
Note: The log can also be located at C: >> AdwCleaner[XX].txt >> XX <-- denotes the number of times the application has been ran.

Scan with JRT:

Please download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.

Note: Temp shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts, how to do so can be read here.

  • Right-click on JRT.exe and select Run as Administrator to launch the application.
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message.
Note: Reboot your machine and ensure all disabled security software is now enabled etc.

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is your computer performing now, any further symptoms and or problems encountered?
  • AdwCleaner Log.
  • Junkware Removal Tool Log.

Hi Dakeyras, thanks for your help.

First, I haven't noticed any further symptoms and I have not encountered any problems. Things seem to run smoothly. I just want to note that the version of Tweaking.com - Registry Backup v1.5.1 was available for update (v1.5.2); I made the registry backup on 1.5.1, I hope that is fine.

Hi. :)

thanks for your help

You're welcome!

First, I haven't noticed any further symptoms and I have not encountered any problems. Things seem to run smoothly

Good.

I just want to note that the version of Tweaking.com - Registry Backup v1.5.1 was available for update (v1.5.2); I made the registry backup on 1.5.1, I hope that is fine.

Absolutely fine, not a problem etc.

Edit: Upon restarting I noticed that my antivirus was still active; I double and triple checked disabling it this time and ran JRT again which yielded different results. This is the different log

Acknowledged.

Re-scan with OTL:

  • Right-click on OTL.exe and select Run as Administrator to start OTL.
  • Ensure Include 64bit Scans is selected.
  • Under Output, ensure that Minimal Output is selected.
  • Under Extra Registry section, select Use SafeList.
  • Click the Scan All Users checkbox.
  • Click on Run Scan at the top left hand corner.
  • When done, two Notepad files will open.
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened
    • Extra.txt <-- Will be minimized
  • Please post the contents of these two notepad files in your next reply.

Hi. :)

Let proceed as follows shall we...

If not aware Windows Sidebar(gadgets) has the potential to compromise the security of a machine it is running on as mentioned here. So it would be best to disable this feature.

Download the Disable Windows Sidebar and Gadgets Fix-it on this page to your desktop.

Once downloaded, double-click on MicrosoftFixit50906.msi >> follow the prompts >> reboot your machine if not advised to do so.

Java Advice:

Out of date Java installations pose a security risk. They can be used by malware as a means to infect a computer and or re-infect.

Now please go to Start(Windows 7 Orb) >> Control Panel >> Programs and Features and remove the following (if present):

Java™ 7 Update 4
JavaFX 2.1.0

To do so click once on each of the above to highlight, then click on Uninstall/Change and follow the prompts.

Regarding a new Java installation, I strongly advise against re-installing a updated version at present because the software as a whole has been exploited of late and your machine could end up seriously infected. Even though this exploit has been reportedly fixed there is still a vulnerability with the software.

Your choice if you wish to go ahead and reinstall but as mentioned I advise against it and for the present I do not even have anything Java related installed on my machines.

So let myself know what you wish to do about this in your next reply please and if you opt to re-install I will provide both the appropriate instructions and safety advice etc.

PMB/P2P Advice:

I see you Pando Media Booster installed, maybe intentionally and or came with one of your installed games for example. Technically this type of software is based upon peer to peer technology and you can never really be sure what it is purportedly downloading is always safe. Plus it does not always make that much of a improvement with downloading.

With regard to µTorrent...It's really important, if you value your PC at all, to stay away from P2P file sharing programs, like utorrent, Bittorrent, Azureus, Limewire, Vuze. Criminals have "planted" thousands upon thousands of infections in the "free" shared files.
Virtually all of these recent infections will compromise your Security, and some can turn your machine into a useless "doorstop".

My friendly advice regarding the aforementioned, is merely uninstall both. However this is choice to do so or not and end of the day I respect whomever I assist with what they wish to have installed on their respective machines.

Custom OTL Script:

  • Right-click OTL.exe and select Run as Administrator to start the program.
  • Copy the lines from the quote-box(do not copy the word quote) to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

Hello, I haven't encountered any further symptoms or problems.

I uninstalled Java and do not wish to reinstall it. I also uninstalled Pando Media Booster and µTorrent.

When OTL was running, an Avira box popped up stating that it had blocked the hosts file (I think). Should I have disabled Avira before running the fix? Upon restarting I also received an Open File - Security Warning box, which only read in regards to OTL that "The publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software?" I just selected yes and everything started fine, here is the OTL log:

Hi. :)

I uninstalled Java and do not wish to reinstall it. I also uninstalled Pando Media Booster and µTorrent.

Fair play, we will target the remnants then in the new custom OTL script below to ensure nothing left behind etc.

Upon restarting I also received an Open File - Security Warning box, which only read in regards to OTL that "The publisher could not be verified. Are you sure you want to run this software?"

That is fine/perfectly normal.

When OTL was running, an Avira box popped up stating that it had blocked the hosts file (I think). Should I have disabled Avira before running the fix?

Aye the OTL custom script log denotes such also. It would appear the Avira Host File Protection feature blocked the reset, which in itself is not a bad thing. However the the fault is mine to be honest as I completely forgot that even even the freeware version of Avira Free Antivirus has the aforementioned feature these days. So please accept my apologies for this over-site on my behalf.

Anyway we can work around that as follows...

Temp' Disable Avira Host File Protection:

  • Right-click on the system tray icon for Avira >> Configure Avira Free Antivirus
  • Once the GUI(graphical user interface) has appeared/loaded >> click on Expert mode >> General >> Security
  • Now de-select the option under the System Protection heading: Protect Windows hosts file from changes >> Apply >> OK
Note: You may re-enable the above after running the custom OTL script below. If Avira warns about the modification afterwards, merely acknowledge/allow it etc.

:Files
C:\Program Files (x86)\Oracle
C\\Program Files (x86)\Pando Networks
C:\Program Files (x86)\utorrent

:Commands
[ResetHosts]
[EmptyTemp]

  • Return to OTL, right-click in the Custom Scans/Fixes window (under the cyan bar) and choose Paste.
  • Then click the red Run Fix button.
  • Let the program run unhindered.
  • If OTL asks to reboot your computer, allow it to do so. The report should appear in Notepad after the reboot.
Note: The logfile can also be located C: >> _OTL >> MovedFiles >> DD/DD/DD TT/TT.txt <-- denotes date/time log created.

ESET Online Scanner:

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Windows 7 users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

  • Please click/go here to run the scan...

Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then right click on it and select Run as Administrator to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.

  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on: Posted Image
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on: Posted Image
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on: Posted Image
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files (x86)/ESET/ESET Online Scanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.
Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • OTL Log from the Custom Script.
  • Eset Log.

I selected to restart when prompted by OTL after running the custom script and everything locked up. Upon force powering down/restarting, Windows was "Applying update operation" in registry\machine ~17000 files(?) I think. It took a couple minutes but things seemed to start fine afterward, was there a specific cause of this? Is it alright?

Here is the OTL log from the custom script:

Hi. :)

Not a actual cause for concern and most likely your machine was applying updates, as in automatic updates was running the time the custom OTL fix was ran etc.

Next:

Now with regard to the online scan results some pertain to elements of the installed Avira Free Antivirus which as part of its installtion process bundles third party related software from Ask.com. Not a major problem and we have removed most of the really bothersome anyway. Also some of the detections are false positives and no specific action is required.

However in your downloads folder itself:-

C:\Users\Jessica\Downloads

Might as well delete the following:-

avira_free_antivirus_en.exe
cbsidlm-tr1_10a-Foxit_Reader-SEO-10313206.exe
cbsidlm-tr1_10a-PDFXChange_Viewer-SEO-10598377.exe
cnet2_revosetup_exe.exe
DAEMONToolsPro510-0333.exe
FoxitReader545.0124_enu_Setup.exe
ineko No Naku Koro Ni + Chiru Episodes 1-8 VN\DTLite4453-0297.exe

Some friendly advice to bare in mind for the future, steer clear of Cnet as a download resource as it just cannot be trusted these days in my humble opinion. I will provide some advice when I give the all clear which sites are far safer as a download resource etc.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

  • Please download TFC to your desktop,
  • Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  • Right-click TFC.exe and select Run as Administrator to launch the application.
  • Click the Start button in the bottom left of TFC
  • If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.
Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It should not take longer than a couple of minutes , and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

I advice you keep TFC on your desktop after I give the all clear and run it say at least once per week as it is a very effective piece of software for cleaning out temp' files etc.

Next:

Let check/update some software as follows shall we...

  • Download and install FileHippo Update Checker from here.
  • Once installed(during the installation process deselect the option:- Run at Startup >> Start(Windows 7 Orb) >> All Programs >> right-click on Update Checker and select Run as Administrator >> a browser window will open after the scan is complete.
  • Download any updates detected(apart from beta updates) to the desktop >> uninstall anything that requires updating via Programs and Features in the Control Panel.
  • Re-install the updated software, delete the installers and then empty the Recycle Bin.
  • When completed the above let myself know and if any further issues remaining, thank you.
Note: When I give the all clear my advice would be to consider keeping FileHippo Update Checker installed. Then periodically use it to check for any updates as having certain software outdated is a potential for malware to gain a foothold and exploit a system etc.

Okay... I deleted the listed files, used TFC as requested, and updated software with FileHippo Update Checker. I followed all of its suggestions save for one - I currently use an older version of Hamachi since I have trouble with newer versions. If it's possible I'd like to continue using the version I have now (2.1.0.215) but I will update if necessary. Overall I haven't noticed any problems at all.

Again, thanks for your help so far and patience with my questions too.

Hi. :)

I currently use an older version of Hamachi since I have trouble with newer versions. If it's possible I'd like to continue using the version I have now (2.1.0.215) but I will update if necessary.

Technically since this software has networking capabilities as in can allow access to your machine and visa versa on a private network created not really ideal using a outdated version to be honest. Even if those you completely trust who have access only still not worth the risk in my humble opinion.

Anyway I checked out the compatibility:-

Hamachi System Requirements, Windows 7 (All versions). Though states been tested and does not actually specify if truly compatible or not. So unlikely that is the problem but feasible as every machine is different. So you could update the software and then run it in compatibility mode for say XP. If it appears to work correctly all well and good, if not merely undo the settings again etc.

  • To do so right click on the executable for Hamachi >> Properties >> Compatibility >> select the option:-
  • Run this program in compatibility mode for: >> then select from the drop down menu Windows XP (Service Pack 3)
  • Now select under Privilege Level: the option Run this program as administrator >> Apply >> OK
For interest sake if not aware and or have a copy, here is the User Guide in PDF format.

Again, thanks for your help so far and patience with my questions too.

You're most welcome!

Overall I haven't noticed any problems at all.

Good...Congratulations your computer appears to be malware free!

Now I have some tasks for your good self to carry out as part of a clean up process and some advice about online safety.

Importance of Regular System Maintenance:

I advice you read both of the below listed topics as this will go a long way to keeping your Computer performing well.

Help! My computer is slow!

Also so is this:

What to do if your Computer is running slowly

Clean up with OTL:

  • Right-click OTL and select Run as Administrator to start the program.
  • Close all other programs apart from OTL as this step will require a reboot.
  • On the OTL main screen, depress the CleanUp button.
  • Say Yes to the prompt and then allow the program to reboot your computer.
The above process should clean up and remove the vast majority of scanners used and logs created etc.

Any left over merely delete yourself and empty the Recycle Bin.

Reset the System Restore points:

Create a new, clean System Restore point:-

  • Right click on Computer and select Properties >> System protection >> Create....
  • Give this restore point a descriptive name and click on Create.
  • When the new restore point is created click on OK >> close the System Properties window etc.
Note: Do not clear infected/old System Restore points before creating a new System Restore point first!

Flush Old System Restore points:-

  • Next click Start(Windows 7 Orb) >> Run (or the Windows key and R together) to bring up the Run box and and copy and paste in:
    cleanmgr
  • in the box and press OK.
  • Select the system drive, C >> OK.
  • Ensure the boxes for Recycle Bin, Temporary Files and Temporary Internet Files are checked, you can choose to check other boxes if you wish but they are not required.
  • Click on Clean up system files >> Select the system drive, C >> OK.
  • Now click on the More Options tab.
  • Under:-
System Restore and Shadow Copies
  • Click on Clean up... >> Delete >> OK >> Delete Files.
Now some advice for on-line safety:

Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware:

This is a excellent application and I advise you keep this installed. Check for updates and run a scan at least once per week.

Other installed security software:

Your presently installed security application, Avira Free Antivirus automatically checks for updates and downloads/installs them with every system reboot and or periodically if the machine is left running providing a internet connection is active.

I advise you also run a complete scan with this also at least once per week.

Registry Backup:

Tweaking.com - Registry Backup, I advice you keep this installed as a means to keep a complete backup of your registry and restore it when needed.

Myself I would actually create a new back up once per week as this along with System Restore may prove to be invaluable if something unforeseen occurs!

A tutorial for Registry Backup explaining the various features be viewed here.

Keep your system updated:

Microsoft releases patches for Windows and other products regularly:

  • Click on Start(Windows 7 Orb) >> All Programs >> Windows Update.
  • In the navigation pane, click Check for updates.
  • After Windows Update has finished checking for updates, click View available updates.
  • Click to select the check box for any found, then click Install.
  • When completed Reboot(restart) your computer if not prompted to do so.
Be careful when opening attachments and downloading files:

Never open email attachments, not even if they are from someone you know. If you need to open them, scan them with your antivirus program before opening.
Never open emails from unknown senders.
Beware of emails that warn about viruses that are spreading, especially those from antivirus vendors. These email addresses can be easily spoofed. Check the antivirus vendor websites to be sure.
Be careful of what you download. Only download files from known sources. Also, avoid cracked programs. If you need a particular program that costs too much for you, try finding free alternatives on Sourceforge or Pricelessware.

Also this web-page is worth bookmarking/reading for future reference:-

Securing Your Web Browser

Stop malicious scripts:

Windows by default allow scripts (which is VBScript and JavaScript) to run and some of these scripts are malicious. Use Noscript by Symantec or Script Defender by AnalogX to handle these scripts.

Avoid Peer to Peer software:

P2P may be a great way to get lots of seemingly freeware, but it is a great way to get infected as well. There's no way to tell if the file being shared is infected. Worse still, some worms spread via P2P networks, infecting you as well. My advice is avoid these types of software applications.

Hosts File:

A Hosts file is like a phone book. You look up someone's name in the phone book before calling him/her. Similarly, your computer will look up the website's IP address before you can view the website.

Hosts file will replace your current Hosts file with another one containing well-known advertisement sites, spyware sites and other bad sites. This new Hosts file will protect you by re-directing these bad sites to 127.0.0.1.

Here are some Hosts files:

Only use one of the above!

Note: If you opt to use one you will have to Temp' Disable Avira Host File Protection first.

Consider installing WinPatrol:

WinPatrol alerts you about possible system hijacks, malware attacks and critical changes made to your computer without your permission.

Download it from here.

You can find information about how WinPatrol works here.

Okay, I was able to do the things asked, including update Hamachi. I do have a few questions which may come off as silly:

First, does this mean I can worry less about having my identity/important information and the like stolen? Was any of the malware I had capable of this?

Second, my school requires use of thumb drives for certain classes (start work in class, bring it home with me via thumb drive). How safe is this - is there a way to protect myself specifically from any threats on an unfamiliar network? Would mailing documents to myself from school's network be any different?

Third, is there such thing as tablet security software (like for Nexus 7)?

Lastly, I was wondering if it would be inappropriate to request a similar "check-up" of my other PC which I also use? If not inappropriate, should I make a new thread?

That's all I can think of to ask. Thank you so much for your help!

Hi. :)

Thank you so much for your help!

You're welcome!

Okay, I was able to do the things asked, including update Hamachi. I do have a few questions which may come off as silly

Good and no questions are silly far as I am concerned, I am a great believer in if you do not know something and or unsure merely ask etc. ;)

First, does this mean I can worry less about having my identity/important information and the like stolen? Haha...

Aye as long as you follow my prior advice. Nothing is completely foolproof but observing both online safety and using practicable surfing habits goes a long way to prevent reinfection.

is there such thing as tablet security software (like for Nexus 7)?

I believe it uses a version of the Android Operating System, so avast! Free Mobile Security should be compatible in theory, plus had a look in the Avast forum and apparently works just fine with a Nexus 7. I use it myself on my Samsung Android Phone and more than happy with it. Plus the vendor is reputable and it does what it says on the box so to speak.

my school requires use of thumb drives for certain classes (start work in class, bring it home with me). How safe is this - is there a way to protect myself specifically from any threats on an unfamiliar network? Would mailing documents to myself from school's network be any different?

I have no idea how secure your schools network may be and or what specific security software is in use so personally I would not email anything to err on the side of caution...

However transferring via a USB Drive can be made secure so your machine(s) are less likely to become compromised/infected as follows:-

Download the installer for Panda USB Vaccine from here to the desktop of your machine.

  • Right-click on USBVaccineSetup.exe and and select Run as Administrator >> follow the prompts in the installation wizard.
  • At the configuration screen(settings)...
  • Ensure both Run Panda USB Vaccine automatically when computer boots (resident mode) & Automatically vaccinate any newly inserted USB key are selected >> plus NTFS support
  • Now click on Next> >> ensure Launch Panda USB Vaccine is selected >> click on Finish.
  • Insert your USB Drive in your machine...it will be automatically vaccinated(as will any usb drives connected in the future).
  • Close Panda USB Vaccine via right-clicking on the Panda USB Vaccine system tray icon and selecting Exit and or leave it running.

Lastly, I was wondering if it would be inappropriate to request a similar "check-up" of my other PC which I also use? If not inappropriate, should I make a new thread?

Sure, not a problem as in we can do so in this topic...Just let myself know which exact Operating System is in use on the other machine.

Thanks for your advice, I'm glad I can protect my tablet and USB drives. My other machine is running Windows XP Professional Version 2002, Service Pack 3. It's an old machine and it runs rather slowly, not certain if it is due to age or malware. MBAM found and quarantined/deleted this recently:
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\TempDIR\BetterInstaller.exe (PUP.BundleInstaller.Somoto)

Afterward, Avira quarantined:
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{211BA828-A636-4C8F-83E0-74A5DF7A930B}\RP466\A0049404.exe
[DETECTION] Is the TR/Drop.Softomat.AN Trojan

Another issue that has persisted is on occasion, the Windows display theme reverts from Windows Classic to Windows XP style. This only happens sometimes, after either a system update/restart or program uninstall followed by a restart.

Here is the new OTL log from my other machine:
