Will run this list you gave me, as I said in one of my emails I am not a computer techie, and in that vain I thought there was only one desktop that was the C Drive, hence my mistake. I will ask someone else for help in the meantime.

Hi. :)

I'm Dakeyras and I am going to try to assist you with your problems...

Will run this list you gave me, as I said in one of my emails I am not a computer techie, and in that vain I thought there was only one desktop that was the C Drive, hence my mistake.

OK I will take into account what you have mentioned and not to worry...For now just let myself know when you have completed the last set of prior instructions provided by my well respected colleague godawgs and we will go from there OK.

Hi. :)

A few questions first as follows...

1 - How old is your computer and did it come with Windows 7 pre-installed or was it upgraded to the present Operating System ?

2 - Are there actually two Hard-Drives and or is it merely one drive spilt into two partitions ? If not sure not a problem OK as we can check that out if the need.

3 - Click on Start(Windows 7 Orb) >> Computer >> double click on the icon for the C drive, is there a folder named Windows present ? If not double click on the icon for the D drive and check etc.

Hi there,

In answer to your questions, my computer is 7 years old but it was upgraded with Windows 7 about 3 years ago.

There are two Drives WinC that has 35.0GB space. And Data D 113GB space.

On the C Drive there is a folder called Windows yes,
Thanks for your help in advance.

For some reason I didn't receive an email to say you had posted a reply, I logged on instead and checked, how can I change this?.

Thanks again

Hi. :)

For some reason I didn't receive an email to say you had posted a reply, I logged on instead and checked, how can I change this?.

May just be one of those things as can occur from time to time but probably be a good idea to ensure you are still subscribed to this actual topic, how to so can be read here. So in your case merely check you are still subscribed and if not select it again etc.

Or alternatively at the top of this topic if one of the blue buttons says Watch Topic, click on that and you will be automatically subscribed again.

Thank you for the clarification and you're most welcome!

Do you have a Windows 7 32 Bit Installation DVD ?

Hard-Drive Free Space Advice:

Now going from part of the header from the last OTL log you posted here it appears the actual main drive with the Operating System installed on is running short of actual free space:-

Drive C: | 35.06 Gb Total Space | 2.74 Gb Free Space | 7.83% Space Free | Partition Type: NTFS

This is considered dangerously low in my humble opinion. A Hard-Drive requires a bare minimum of 15% available free space to be able to function correctly, but at least 25% is far better...

I advise you consider uninstalling some software you do not need and or move any documents/files/pictures etc to a form of removable storage media. Or move some of the latter to the D drive itself for example.

This is just my friendly advice as the lack of current Hard-Drive space will be impacting on overall system performance. Plus eventually any type of system maintenance will prove to be problematic and the machine may even cease to boot up at all in the worst case scenario.

Set download Location as Desktop on the C Drive:

Carry out the below as follows for both browsers installed on your machine...

For Internet Explorer:-

  • Launch the browser >> click on the Gear icon in the upper left hand corner of the window >> View downloads
  • In the View Downloads - Windows Internet Explorer window that has now appeared >> click on Options
  • Now in the Download Options window that has now appeared >> click on the Browse... tab >>
  • The Select a default destination folder for your downloads window should now have appeared >> click on Desktop >> Select Folder >> OK >> Close
For Mozilla Firefox:-

  • Launch the browser >> click on Tools >> Options >> ensure the General tab is selected
  • Under the Downloads heading >> click on the Browse... tab >> when the Choose Download Folder appears
  • Click on Desktop >> Select Folder >> OK
Note: When I give the all clear you may reset the download location for both browsers back to the defualt/downloads folder if you so wish.

Scan with DDS:

Please download DDS and save it to your Desktop from here.

Alternate downloads are here or here.

  • Disable any script blocker(if installed), and then double click on DDS to run the tool.
  • When done, DDS will have created two logs on the desktop:
  • DDS.txt
  • Attach.txt
  • Please post the contents of these two Notepad files in your next reply.
Next:

When completed the above, please post back the following in the order asked for:

  • How is you computer performing now, any further symptoms and or problems encountered ?
  • Answer to my Windows 7 32 Bit Installation DVD query.
  • Both DDS logs. <-- Post them individually please, IE: one Log per post/reply.

Hello, Thank you for helping.

I would love to get rid of some of the programs off the C Drive but am not sure which I can delete safely, any tips. Computer running ok at moment although I cannot access Hotmail today, not sure why as there is no problem with it as I have checked online. Another thing that happens is files keep being locked, when i have not done this...annoying !!

I will update you of any symptoms? I deleted a few files from desktop and was given the option of going to Programs to uninstall I searched for them there and they were not there, is this normal?

No I do not have Windows & 32 Bit installation DVD.

Here is the first log, i will send the second one in another post as you say to do.

Cheers

Hi. :)

Acknowledged and we will address such in due course after we get a few fairly basic fixes completed...

Though as it stands the actual overall size of the main Hard-Drive is a tad on the small size being only 35 GB to start with for a modern Operating System such as Windows 7. Not to worry though we can see what can be done as mentioned prior.

Not quite sure what you mean so could elaborate please, as in what exactly is in this folder and can you recall where it was saved to ?

Next:

No I do not have Windows & 32 Bit installation DVD.

As it stands not having any means to access the System Recovery Options in the event your machine becomes un-bootable is not good...However there is a way around this if you actually create Startup Repair Disk.

Click on the link below and follow the instructions:-

How to create a Windows 7 Startup Repair Disk

Once created/done, inform myself in your next reply and we may just be using this disk to implement some repairs if the need etc.

Next:

Temporarily disable WinPatrol(so it will not hinder the below, it will automatically start after the system reboot):-

  • Right click on the WinPatrol system tray icon.
  • Select Exit Program.
Reset Trusted Zone:

  • Right-click Here and select Save target as... to download WinHelp2002's DelDomains.inf.
  • Please save the file to the desktop.
  • Right-click on DelDomains.inf >> Install
StartUpLite:

Please download this small application from here to the dektop

It is very simple to use and quite effective and will advise about any unnecessary system startups that can be safely removed.

Merely right-click on startuplite-setup-1.07.exe and and select Run as Administrator >> follow the prompts.

Disable Sidebar:

If not aware Windows Sidebar(gadgets) has the potential to comprise the security of a machine it is running on as mentioned here. So it would be best to disable this feature.

  • Download the Disable Windows Sidebar and Gadgets Fixt it on this page to your desktop.
  • Once downloaded, double-click on MicrosoftFixit50906.msi >> follow the prompts >> reboot your machine if not advised to do so.
Next:

Let myself know when completed the above, if able to create a Startup Repair Disk. Then we will go from there, thank you.

Hi. :)

Just done the above, have realized that my system repair disc i made a while back will probably be good to use, however I have made another and completed all the instructions

Fair play/good...we will use that(one of them) as I mentioned prior in due course. For now we will try and rectify the other issues etc.

also deleted some files so 7 GB free on C Drive at mo, probably still not enough

Good, did this include the folder you mentioned prior ?

Below is some software presently installed that is neither Operating System or Security related that is not really required unless you wish to keep that is.

Since it is your machine after-all, my advice is decide which you do not really need and or use very often and uninstall:-

ABBYY FineReader 6.0 Sprint
Adobe AIR
Adobe Flash Player 11 ActiveX
Adobe Flash Player 11 Plugin
Adobe Premiere Pro CS4
Adobe Reader X (10.1.6)
Adobe Setup
Apple Application Support
Google Chrome
Google Earth Plug-in
Google Update Helper
Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing 9.0.0
Microsoft Silverlight
Mozilla Maintenance Service
MyFreeCodec
OLYMPUS Master 2
OLYMPUS Studio 2
PC Connectivity Solution
Picasa 3
Plustek OpticBook 3600
PRINCE2 Event Prep
Prism Video File Converter
QuickTime
RealUpgrade 1.1
Skype™ 6.1
Spotify
Strongvault Online Backup
Ten Thumbs 4.1.1
TuneUp Utilities Language Pack (en-GB)
VLC media player 1.0.1

To do so click on Start(Windows 7 Orb) >> Control Panel >> Programs and Features and to uninstall any of the above >> click once on it to highlight >> then click on Uninstall/Change and follow the prompts.

Next:

I now have hotmail but it is taking ages to do anything also lots of files still locked.

This should improve once more actual Hard-Drive free space is created as these symptoms can be a sign of the aforementioned. Just keep myself informed about this and if the need we can in due course look into it more specifically.

Next:

I tried to remove Avast Software and it said need permission also Avg need system permission, all very confusing as it didnt used to be like this.

Which version exact version of Avast Anti-Virus did have you had installed can you recall ?
