Hi there,

I have a Compaq 6830s laptop with Windows Vista Service Pack 2. Lately, my laptop has been getting very slow, giving several error codes. It seems to me that this is caused by the fact that the system fails to look for Windows updates (I get errorcode 80096001). I tried all the fixes microsoft suggests (including the Fixit), but nothing helped. Also, I ran Malware Bytes Anti-Malware to see if this would help, but it said that no infections were detected.
I have checked all kinds of fora, but with no success so far. Does anyone have suggestions on what to do?

Thanks a lot in advance!

I managed to remove the programs you listed. Also, I uninstalled all wireless and wired connection. However, when I go the network center, there is no connection to right-click. How do I uncheck Ipv6? And also, how will I be able to run the Fix it item afterwards without having a connection?

Thanks again! I think I managed to take al the steps as decribed. However, TFC gave an error. This happened after it removed about 300 MB of temp files, so maybe it did help somehow. When I reran the programme, the same thing happened again.

Here's the minitoolbox log, let's get started with the autorun items :-)

Download Ccleaner then hit the tools button then the start up button and then disable all items from start-up except.

Avast and "hpWirelessAssistant"

http://www.piriform....wnload/standard

Do not use the registry cleaner of Ccleaner unless you know what you are deleting. :)

After disabling the items in CCleaner run the cleaner function.

Close Ccleaner.

Open your Copy of Autoruns and untick the items below.

These are under "Task Scheduler"

+ "\Apple\AppleSoftwareUpdate" "Apple Software Update" "Apple Inc." "c:\program files\apple software update\softwareupdate.exe"
+ "\HP Health Check" "HP Health Check Scheduler" "Hewlett-Packard" "c:\program files\hewlett-packard\hp health check\hphc_scheduler.exe"
+ "\Microsoft\Windows Defender\MP Scheduled Scan" "Windows Defender Command Line Utility" "Microsoft Corporation" "c:\program files\windows defender\mpcmdrun.exe"
+ "\Microsoft\Windows Defender\MP Scheduled Signature Update" "Windows Defender Command Line Utility" "Microsoft Corporation" "c:\program files\windows defender\mpcmdrun.exe"
+ "\Microsoft\Windows Live\SOXE\Extractor Definitions Update Task" "Windows Live Social Object Extractor Engine" "Microsoft Corporation" "c:\program files\windows live\soxe\wlsoxe.dll"
+ "\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsCalendar\Reminders - Gijs & Noor" "Windows Agenda" "Microsoft Corporation" "c:\program files\windows calendar\wincal.exe"
+ "\Microsoft\Windows\Wired\GatherWiredInfo" "" "" "c:\windows\system32\gatherwiredinfo.vbs"
+ "\Microsoft\Windows\Wireless\GatherWirelessInfo" "" "" "c:\windows\system32\gatherwirelessinfo.vbs"
+ "\OptimizerProUpdaterRefreshTask" "" "" "File not found: C:\ProgramData\OptimizerPro\updater.exe"
+ "\{52BDA467-33B8-4DEC-B213-9BFD818139D5}" "Skype " "Skype Technologies S.A." "c:\program files\skype\phone\skype.exe"

Close autoruns and then reboot.

I would like a new autoruns log after you reboot because I had you remove a few program's and there items are still showing in the log making it a bit confusing for me.

Now check windows updates and report any issue(s).

Unfortunately, I still get the same "unknown error" 80096001.

I hope you still have some tricks in mind that might help? Here's the autorun-log.

Here is a trick I saw posted on this site some time ago and it will usually work for updates.

Open an elevated command prompt and copy and paste or type the contents of the code box into the command prompt window.

This will open the built in admin account for vista/7 Users

net user administrator /active:yes

Now log out of your account and log into the admin account. Then run the fix it below and put a tick next to aggresive mode.
http://go.microsoft....?linkid=9665683

After running the tool reboot and see if you are able to update your machine.

You should not be running Combofix unless instructed by a trained malware tech.

Open your autoruns and un-tick the items below.

These are under

"HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services"

+ "catchme" "" "" "File not found: C:\Users\GIJS&N~1\AppData\Local\Temp\catchme.sys"
+ "RkHit" "" "" "File not found: C:\windows\system32\drivers\RKHit.sys"

Go here and install the intel Rapid Storage driver please.
http://downloadcente...=eng&iid=dc_rss

Reboot and test your updates if the other step's failed.

How is the machine running other than the update issues?

This must be a tough problem... updates still not working even though I tried both suggestions.
The system is very slow, seems to be "thinking" a lot.
