hi,
last night while watching a dvd, static started intermittently interrupting the audio, it came and went in short bursts of 2-5 seconds or so, then after about 40 mins, it became constant and totally drowned out the audio. This morning, it was still there, but the audio is now very faint under the static.
I have tried a different set of speakers and a set of headphones with the same result.
I have checked the sound on control panel and the levels are normal
I had a similar issue in the past which corrected itself after i dusted out the CPU but this time the unit is freshly cleaned and just back from the shop as I had the internal drive replaced about a week ago.
Any suggestions?

You could try using Glary Utilities which has a Memory Optimizer feature which may help you with this:-

It has other useful functions most covered by the 'One Click Maintenance' feature which I use quite frequently and find it very helpful at clearing out some rubbish clogging up and wasting memory. Let us know how you get on.

well, the Glary link was helpful in that it cleaned up a lot of crap (thumbs up househeart) but it hasn't helped with the audio issue, which has changed to just speaker hiss with very faint audio if you turn up very high...
could this be a problem with the audio card/board? i bought this beast off a friend and as far as i know it was cobbled together from secondhand bits hence the new internal drive last week, as said before there has been similar problems in the past.

You can test your audio card and speakers in Windows XP by clicking the Start Menu on the desktop then selecting Control Panel. Once it opens up double click on the Sounds and Audio Devices icon. Here you will see details for your audio device also change its volume and your speaker volume. If you select the Sounds tab at the top of the window then you will see a Program Events window near the bottom. Here you can test your audio device and speakers with built in sounds that come with Windows XP. If you still get speaker hiss and faint audio let us know thanks.
