Hello All,

On a recent 64-bit Win7 Pro SP1 install, I sometimes get "Not Responding" message on an application. While the application is hanging, Resource Monitor shows a fully maxed out blue line in the Disk graph while the disk usage number varies around 2 or 3 KB/sec with occasional spikes up to 1MB/sec. After about a minute, the hang-up ends, and the blue line in the Disk graph falls to a much lower number (around 10 or 20 percent). The "Not Responding" message occurs on a wide variety of applications. I don't see any pattern leading up to these hang-ups. They occur at random intervals sometimes 4 or 5 in a ten-minute period. Sometimes no hang-ups for over an hour. Rebooting doesn't make any difference. I even tried Safe Mode with internet access. I still got occasional hangups.

In a check of Device Manager, I see no fault indications. While checking each driver for possible updates, I noticed five different audio drivers. You can see the complete hardware and software specifications of this PC at: http://speccy.pirifo...NPls6wrVlmC7XU3 As a secondary question, I'd like to know whether I ought to delete all but one audio driver. If so, which one should I keep? BTW, I am not having any audio problems unless it is a video player that is hanging, but then the video is also hanging.

I have tried various fixes that I found online such as temporarily disabling my AV Protection (Microsoft Security Essentials) or disabling automatic file and folder indexing, or running CHKDSK D: /r and CHKDSK E: /r but the problem persists.

I doubt I have any malware infection because fully updated versions of MalwareBytes and SUPERAntiSpyware find nothing but a few tracking cookies. I also used the ESET online scanner with no malware found.

The C drive is a 120GB SSD (46% used space). The D and E drives are separate physical 1TB drives. D drive 5% used space. E drive 12% used space.

Any troubleshooting ideas?

Thank you for your help.

If it is the SSD you are talking about, some ideas. Before making any alterations, create a drive image and recovery disk using the windows built in tools.
Try using this tool which may help you to find what is using the resources of the HDD. > http://technet.micro...ernals/bb896645
>

Turn off Hibernation.
Shrink System Restore.
Shrink the size of Page file
Turn off Drive Indexing.
Ensure that disk defrag is off for the SSD.

Hi iammykyl

Thanks for the quick reply.

If it is the SSD you are talking about, some ideas.

I'm not particularly focused on the SSD, but I did follow your suggestions.

  • Hibernation was disabled when I installed the OS. It has never been re-enabled.
  • System Restore is using 1%. I think that's small enough.
  • The Page File is 16.3GB. 16GB of RAM is installed, therefore, the PF is designed to accommodate a complete memory dump plus 300MB of overhead.
  • I turned off Drive Indexing on all drives.
  • I never defrag the SSD.

I installed Process Monitor from SysInternals about a month ago, but I don't see how to use it to identify what's causing the hang-ups. That's why I've been watching the built-in Resource Monitor. The RM shows the blue line in the Disk graph at maximum when any application is not responding. Can you tell me how to relate the info available from Process Monitor to the possible disk utilization issue?

Do you have any info related to my original question about the five audio device drivers.

Summarizing three pending questions:
  • How to use Process Monitor to ident the culprit?
  • Keep all or delete four audio device drivers?
  • Troubleshooting ideas for the main issue: the random hang-ups?

During the time I've been reading your message and drafting this reply (about 25 minutes), I didn't see any hang-ups.

Thank you.

Q1. Only been using ProMon for a couple of weeks, so don/t know enough to give advice on it's use.
Q2. For troubleshooting I would be more inclined to disable a device or prevent drivers from loading rather than uninstall.
I don't see an obvious indication of a hardware problem as you have not had a shut down or BSOD.
Q3. Look in system logs and event viewer. Check that TRIM is actually working. Are you using the latest BIOS?

Will ask another member to look in on the topic.

Hi iammykyl

Q1. Only been using ProMon for a couple of weeks, so don/t know enough to give advice on it's use.

I've poured through the Help pages in Process Monitor, but I don't see how to find what is causing hang-ups. Didn't find anyting really relevant in Google search.

Q2. For troubleshooting I would be more inclined to disable a device or prevent drivers from loading rather than uninstall.

Is it normal for Win7 to load five audio drivers? If not, which of the five should I disable or prevent from loading? Please refer to the Speccy snapshot at http://speccy.pirifo...NPls6wrVlmC7XU3 to see the existing drivers.

Q3. Look in system logs and event viewer. Check that TRIM is actually working. Are you using the latest BIOS?

What am I looking for in the logs? Please give me an example of a log entry that would point to the culprit. What is "TRIM"? The American Megaatrends BIOS version 0906 is dated 09/17/2012. All Google searches for this BIOS show earlier updates.

Will ask another member to look in on the topic.

I appreciate your help, and I welcome advice from any other source.

Note: Since bootup this morning, I have had multiple hang-ups for about 30 to 90 seconds each in Windows Explorer, Firefox v19.0, Windows Photo and FAX viewer. When one of these applications is hanging, the other applications appear to continue to run normally. In all cases, the blue line in the Disk graph of the built-in Resource Monitor is maxed out during the hang-up.

Thank you

I do not think I have missed it, if I have, I apologise.

On Resource Monitor - looking at the graphs on the right, which disk is it, that is showing the spike.

Then on the central window expand the entries under the disk tab.

This may give you a better idea of where the problem lies.

Secondly, I know you have run a chkdsk, but have you run a system file check.

cmd prompt with admin rights.
type
sfc /scannow

TRIM is the management of the SSD, included in Windows 7.

Please proceed as above and I post for you on the event viewer and how to get the report - now posted below

Re the audio, do NOT uninstall any of those drivers, but I would have expected to see
Version 5.10.0.6699&6.0.1.66

Description Realtek Audio Driver V5.10.0.6699 for Windows XP 32bit & 64bit.(WHQL)
Realtek Audio Driver V6.0.1.6699 for Windows Vista/7/8 32bit & 64bit.(WHQL)
File Size
146.46 (MBytes) 2012/10/22 update

What please is listed in device manager under Sounds etc.

That 550Ti if I am not mistaken is connected DVI, is it not. If of course it is connected HDMI then you are using audio from the integrated chip across the bus via the card

Is you audio connected from the I/O port - speakers.

Further to my last TRIM if set runs automatically

How do I know if TRIM is working in Windows 7?.

In the Elevated command Prompt windows,
type the following:
fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify

Results explained below:DisableDeleteNotify = 1 (Windows TRIM commands are disabled)

DisableDeleteNotify = 0 (Windows TRIM commands are enabled)

and TRIM is basically a cmd for TRIMMING the SSD
it is called TRIM because something is being trimmed.

Trim is for example a common name of a function in programming languages to delete leading and trailing whitespace from a string which is in a way what TRIM does on SSDs.

I would assume it is written uppercase because TRIM is an ATA-command and they are all written uppercase in the official documents.

And whats being trimmed?

Basically the operating system tells the drive which sectors are no longer in use. Usually when using an HDD this is not necessary because an HDD can just write over existing data. An SSD has to erase a block before it is able to write to it and that operation takes a lot of time. So if the OS can't tell the SSD what sectors are free this erase-operation can only be done at the time you want to save something which leads to very slow write speeds once the SSD has been used a lot.

If the SSD knows about sectors that became free it can erase the blocks in the background and has erased blocks handy as soon you want to save something.

So in a way the space used on an SSD is being trimmed

Posted separately to keep it easier for you to follow.
Go Control Panel.
Admin Tools
Event Viewer
On left pane click to expand Windows Logs
Click Application.
when that log loads select the first event in the log, by clicking once to highlight

Now on right pane click Find
type
application error
it will now find the first entry for you recording that event and list the details, in the central window.
It may or may not assist.
Then click on find next.

Check as well ANY other errors, both on application and system log.
You may do that by clicking once on the heading of the column LEVEL.
If you now scroll on the right of the window ERROR will be at the top or bottom depending on where they were before.

You may also sort by date etc using the same system

Hi Macboatmaster,

Thank you for helping me.

On Resource Monitor - looking at the graphs on the right, which disk is it, that is showing the spike.

Until you mentioned it, I didn't see a way to get graphs for each disk. Now that I have the four Disk graphs displayed, I haven't had any hangups. Also, I'm not doing any disk I/O right now, so only the C drive is active. It shows a continuous series of spiles of varying amplitude, but full deflection on the vertical scale is only 0.01 Que Length. Also, I haven't had any recent hangups but I've been working mostly on a separate PC. Next time I get a hang, I'll look to see which disk is hanging.

Secondly, I know you have run a chkdsk, but have you run a system file check.

Here's what I see in CMD window:

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
Verification 100% complete.
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.
Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example
C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

The CBS.Log file contains 6639 lines including 130 POQ groups. I don't know how to interpret POQ results. The final two POQ groups follow:
POQ 129 starts:

POQ 129 ends.

It looks like I have a corrupted notepad.exe.mui I don't know how serious that is or whether it is relevant to the hang-up problem.

More in my next reply shortly.

I would not associate it with the problem, unless I am missing something.

It is Multi-language User Interface.

Will notepad open OK and work as it should.

Addressing the problem, have you had this problem since you installed the OS on the SSD, or has it arisen after that.
In other words was it OK at first.

When you first prepared the SSD for the installation of the operating system, would you please explain briefly how you did this, and what you used to install the OS on the SSD

Hi Macboatmaster,

Re the audio, do NOT uninstall any of those drivers, but I would have expected to see
Version 5.10.0.6699&6.0.1.66

This is a Win7 PC. The device driver for High Definition Audio Device is 6.1.7601.17514 11/19/2010. Windows reports that it is the latest available. The speaker output cable goes through a 3-way KVM switch to two desktop audio speakers. The audio system is working normally. I.e., when I switch to either of the other two PCs, I get the same quality audio. If you think it is normal for a Win7 PC to have five audio drivers installed, I won't disable or uninstall any of them.

That 550Ti if I am not mistaken is connected DVI, is it not. If of course it is connected HDMI then you are using audio from the integrated chip across the bus via the card

The following is quoted from the Speccy report:

GeForce GTX 550 Ti
GPU GF116
Device ID 10DE-1244
Revision A2
Subvendor ASUStek Computer Inc (1043)
Current Performance Level Level 1
Current GPU Clock 50 MHz
Current Memory Clock 135 MHz
Current Shader Clock 101 MHz
Voltage 0.950 V
Die Size 238 nm²
Release Date Mar 15, 2011
DirectX Support 11.0
OpenGL Support 5.0
Bus Interface PCI Express x16
Temperature 31 °C
Driver version 9.18.13.1090
BIOS Version 70.26.20.00.00
ROPs 32
Shaders 192 unified
Physical Memory 1023 MB
Virtual Memory 224 MB

Please refer to the Speccy snapshot at http://speccy.pirifo...NPls6wrVlmC7XU3 to see the full specs for this PC.

Hi Macboatmaster,

Will notepad open OK and work as it should.

Yes, Notepad works fine.

Addressing the problem, have you had this problem since you installed the OS on the SSD, or has it arisen after that.
In other words was it OK at first.

This is a newly built home-brew PC. The OS has never been installed on anything other than the SSD (C drive).

When you first prepared the SSD for the installation of the operating system, would you please explain briefly how you did this, and what you used to install the OS on the SSD

No special prep for the SSD. I powered ON the computer with the installation disk in the DVD tray and followed the prompts for a clean install. Windows created a 100MB NTFS partition called "System Reserved" ahead of the C drive. The System Reserved partition has no drive letter.

I am signing off shortly - in about 30 minutes.

I see that it is after midnight in Wales. Many thanks for staying with me up to this point.

BTW, No hangups recently (I've been using only the system logs and the browser -- no disk I/O).

Best regards,

1. Re the audio - sorry for including both it was a copy and paste from YOUR motherboard - drivers

Driver V6.0.1.6699 for Windows Vista/7/8 32bit & 64bit.(WHQL)

you quoted the one above, but I led you into that by pasting the whole.

2. Re the 550Ti - yes I did read Speccy and look at the 550Ti. and as I said if it is connected DVI - Digital Video Interface it cannot relay audio, if it connected HDMI it can take the audio from the integrated chip on the motherboard and across the PCI bus to the card and from there via the HDMII asked because it was easier than tryng to work it out.

3. I would leave them - the audio drivers as they are. I only covered it bacause you asked, I never thought it part of the problem - IMHO

4. On the CBS logs click edit and find
type
cannot repair
then when it finds it, you may copy that and create a separate log, then Find next and the same.

You will therefore end up with only the cannot repair.

You may use F3 as a shortcut to find

5. I cannot now look at the event logs, but will when I return about 1700 hrs UK time it is now --59 hrs.

6. Would you please see my post 11 and answer the two queries re the problem and the install of the OS to the SSD

7. Notepad - is I presume working OK - also post 11.

8. Re the event logs, use time and date to search, otherwise as you found we will be swamped.Confine yourself to say the last two days of the problem

9. At THIS TIME and I need more examination of the failures ONLY on the SFC and the RECENT errors only on the event log, please post those

I consider the issue is POSSIBLY and I can put it no stronger than that at this time, HOW you installed on the SSD.

Please answer that in respect of the point at 6 above.

I am going offline nowGoodnightAlways enjoy something a little testing and working with someone as easy to - do so as you.
