My boyfriend may have messed with my internet settings trying to make the internet faster on my XP. Now it says I'm connected but I can't surf the web from either Firefox or chrome. When I hit repair it finishes repairing & my icon says I'm connected but it still doesn't work. I've reset the modem & router & still nothing.

Perhaps try a system restore.
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084

If that fails then see below.

Please download MINITOOLBOX and run it.
http://download.blee...MiniToolBox.exe

Checkmark following boxes:

Flush DNS
Reset FF proxy Settings
Reset Ie Proxy Settings
Report IE Proxy Settings
Report FF Proxy Settings
List content of Hosts
List IP configuration
List Winsock Entries
List last 10 Event Viewer log
List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size
List Devices (problems only)

Click Go and post the result.

Without actually knowing what is going on it will be hard to determine the issue.
This will just be a shot in the dark but lets try it.

Open a notepad and type each command into it then save it to your desktop as fix.bat double click it after it shut's the machine down check the connection.

@Echo on
pushd\windows\system32\drivers\etc
attrib -h -s -r hosts
echo 127.0.0.1 localhost>HOSTS
attrib +r +h +s hosts
popd
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset all
netsh int ip reset all
shutdown -r -t 1
del %0

Ok now open your device manager and un install your network drivers and then reboot.
http://pcsupport.abo.../f/opendmxp.htm

Hit the + next to your network adapters then right click and un install both then reboot the machine.
