Hi all. I'm working on the laptop from Hades again with a different prob. this time. My neighbor brought it over and said the CD/DVD drv. worked intermittently, then disappeared altogether.

I looked it over and saw that it wasn't showing in Computer, nor Device Mgr., so I've been all over the internet and did these:
Deleted LowerFilters in Reg. Edit. (UpperFilters wasn't listed)--rebooted--no
success
Physically removed and re-inserted the drv.--no success
Ran MS FixIt--no success
Booted into Safe Mode--drv. is not shown there either
Ck'd. "dumbed down" PhoenixBIOS Setup vF.34--headings were Main, Security, System Configuration, Diagnostics, and Exit. In System Configuration>Boot Options>Boot Order:

ATAPI CD/DVD ROM Drive (I can hear the drv. "bump" during bootup)
Notebook Hard Drive
USB Diskette On Key
USB Hard Drive
Network Adapter

I let it go for a few days as I had others to work on, then she showed up up with a new drv. and insisted I install it. I told her I didn't think the drv. was at fault, but I installed it as she DID NOT want the old drv. back in it. When I booted into Windows, it found the new drv. and was shown in Computer and Device Mgr. After testing it with different CDs, DVDs, etc., all seemed OK until I tried to install MS Works (it got about halfway thru, then just sat there--no CD/DVD drv.activity whatsoever. I ck'd. Computer and Device Mgr.--no CD/DVD again!!!!!!!

I'm not a pc expert, so I'm now at a standstill. Could someone please help me fix this issue? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

If I may chime in folks.

You have done a couple of the following suggestions already emptypockets1 but there are a couple to try, as the drive has been replaced and the issue then reappeared the socket on the notebooks MB could either be bad or the contacts simply dirty and in need of a good clean.

One of these may help:
1. Uninstall the drive through Device Manager.
Restart computer. The drive will be automatically reinstalled.

Restart computer.

3. Download, and run http://www.dougknox...._cd_dvd_fix.htm
Double click on cdgone.zip to unzip it.
Right click on cdgone.reg, click Merge.
Accept registry merge.
Restart computer.
or...
4. Go to Device Manager, click a "+" sign next to IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers.
You'll see two items:
- ATA Channel0 (or Primary Channel)
- ATA Channel1 (or Secondary Channel)
Right click on each of them, and click Uninstall. Confirm.
Restart Windows. They'll be automatically reinstalled.

Using an external USB optical drive is an option and one that would be far less expensive than purchasing the internal drive that HP provides.

Thanks for the post phillpower2. I've cleaned the contacts and followed the steps in your post.

1. Can't uninstall in Device Mgr.--nothing there to uninstall
2. MS FixIt was a joke
3. DougKnox was for XP and I've already done the Regedit Filters thing
4. Already deleted the ATA Channels and reinstalled--no success

I told her that an external USB drv. was an option, but she already bought this internal and can't return it now (time has expired). She won't go that route.

I am suspecting an issue with the MB so the following is a long shot in case of missing files on the HDD;

Go to Start and then to Run ("Start Search" in Vista),
Type in: sfc /scannow
Click OK (Enter in Vista).
If System File Checker (sfc) finds any errors, it may ask you for the CD/DVD if so we are stuck and cannot proceed.
If sfc does not find any errors in Windows XP, it will simply quit, without any message.
In Vista you will receive the following message: "Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations".
For Vista users ONLY: Navigate to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS folder. You'll see CBS.log file.
Usually, it's pretty big file, so upload it to http://www.mediafire.com/ and then post download link here.

Your update may point to either a bad MB socket or damaged OS files, try checking the software approach first;

As the use of the optical drive is ruled out you could try downloading a Vista iso and then copying it to a USB thumbdrive and use that to do a repair installation of Vista

I'm back phillpower. Been working on a bootable thumb drive for the last couple of days as per the links u provided, but I can't get it to work. It boots from the thumb drive>Install Windows (I thought, sure, I'll reinstall Vista again since I already have all the drivers for this laptop)>Choose language, etc.>Copying files>Extracting files>"Windows cannot install required files. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation".

Why won't this cantankerous old heifer cooperate with me?
