All

many thanks for reading.

My daughter's laptop looks like it is infected somehow, I suspect unsecure access at a friends house. I began with looking to complete the Farr process. However even though I have Farr on the USB stick I can't find any option on the Advanced start (F8) that will take m to the Command Prompt to allow navigation to the programme.

Can't believe I'm stuck so early. Appreciate any help that can be offered.

Thanks

Hello and welcome to Geeks to Go. I am sorry that you are having troubles with your computer and will try my best to help you. I know that being infected is very frustrating, but I will be here to help you through the whole process of cleaning. Removing malware can be difficult and complicated and will most likely take many steps, so please stick with me until I have declared your computer clean. I always recommend printing my instructions before following them in case you cannot keep this webpage open. Please be sure to alway follow all steps exactly as they are written and let me know what happens each time. Stop and ask if something unexpected happens or if you are unsure of how to proceed.

Please respect my volunteered time and stay with me until I declare your computer clean. If you are going to be delayed for a while, please let me know.

Please note that I am currently in training as a GeekU Senior. My posts must be reviewed by an instructor, so there may be a slight delay.

Before we get started, can you verify what OS is on the laptop. Is it Windows 7? Do you know if the computer is 32-bit or 64-bit.

We have another way to get to the command prompt, but before we do that I just want to make sure that you tried the below instructions. Can you also tell me what options it does give you?

To enter System Recovery Options from the Advanced Boot Options:
  • Restart the computer.
  • As soon as the BIOS is loaded begin tapping the F8 key until Advanced Boot Options appears.
  • Use the arrow keys to select the Repair your computer menu item.
  • Select English as the keyboard language settings, and then click Next.
  • Select the operating system you want to repair, and then click Next.
  • Select your user account an click Next.
On the System Recovery Options menu you will get the following options:Startup Repair
System Restore
Windows Complete PC Restore
Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool
Command Prompt

Hi mcfaddea,

Let's try this. Prepare the USB on your working computer. I am assuming the infected computer is 64-bit. If it doesn't work, let me know and we can try 32-bit.

Download the following three programmes to your desktop :

1. WiNTBootIc
2. Windows 7 RC
3. Farbar Recovery Scan Tool

Extract wintoboot to your desktop
Insert a USB drive of at least 1GB
Run Wintoboot

Posted Image

Drag and drop the Windows 7 ISO to the programme in the space indicated
Tick the Format box and accept the warnings
Press Do It

You will see it progressing

Posted Image

It will let you know when it is done
Then copy FRST to the same USB

Posted Image

Insert the USB into the sick computer and start the computer. First ensuring that the system is set to boot from USB
Note: If you are not sure how to do that follow the instructions Here

When you reboot you will see this although yours will say windows 7.
Click repair my computer

Select your operating system

Select Command prompt

At the command prompt type the following :

notepad and press Enter.
The notepad opens. Under File menu select Open.
Select "Computer" and find your flash drive letter and close the notepad.
In the command window type e:\frst64.exe and press Enter
Note: Replace letter e with the drive letter of your flash drive.
The tool will start to run.
When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.

Press Scan button.
It will make a log (FRST.txt) on the flash drive. Please copy and paste it to your reply.

Hi mcfaddea,

Can you burn a CD? Let's try booting from this:

  • Download OTLPEStd.exe to your desktop
  • Ensure that you have a blank CD in the drive
  • Double click OTLPEStd.exe and this will then open imgburn to burn the file to CD
  • Reboot your system using the boot CD you just created.
Note : If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps here
  • As the CD needs to detect your hardware and load the operating system, I would recommend a nice cup of tea whilst it loads :)

  • Your system should now display a Reatogo desktop.
Note : as you are running from CD it is not exactly speedy
  • Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
  • Select the Windows folder of the infected drive if it asks for a location
  • When asked "Do you wish to load the remote registry", select Yes
  • When asked "Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning", select Yes
  • Ensure the box "Automatically Load All Remaining Users" is checked and press OK
  • OTL should now start.
  • Press Run Scan to start the scan.
  • When finished, the file will be saved in drive C:\OTL.txt
  • Copy this file to your USB drive if you do not have internet connection on this system.
  • Right click the file and select send to : select the USB drive.
  • Confirm that it has copied to the USB drive by selecting it
  • You can backup any files that you wish from this OS
  • Please post the contents of the C:\OTL.txt file in your reply.

Hi mcfaddea,

Question I have is why did it try and boot XP when the laptop has win 7?

The CD was a small bootable version of XP that we were going to use to repair your computer. But since that didn't work...

and
Where to now?

Let's try this. Download imgburn to you computer and install it. Then follow this tutorial to burn the Windows 7 64-bit Recovery Console iso image that you downloaded earlier to a CD. Then see if you can boot from that and follow the instructions below. You will still need your flash drive with FRST on it, but you will boot from the CD instead of the USB drive.

Insert the CD into the sick computer and start the computer. First ensuring that the system is set to boot from CD.
Note: If you are not sure how to do that follow the instructions Here

When you reboot you will see this although yours will say windows 7.
