Found them there.

I'll pick up that enclosure tonight and move files over to my office computer.

Probably just going to install XP Pro on that drive or get a bigger drive and use this one as a back-up.

Sounds like classic sasser virus to me, so try this before jumping through any more hoops: Boot into Windows, normal mode is fine. Quickly go Start, Run and type Shutdown.exe -a to stop the shutdown process. Tape the command onto your keyboard--you'll need to use it more than once, and if you have to go looking for it your computer will be rebooting before you can enter the magic potion. Go to http://www.microsoft...er_printxp.mspx
and jump through those hoops; they don't require data-endangering steps, and they *will* rid your PC of Sasser, if that's in fact what's got you down. That's my bet on what your issue is, though I re-read your post several times to see what I was missing as, surprisingly, none of the other wizards here had smelled Sasser.

Stick with it & you should have knocked soon. Good luck.

I'd be more than willing to try anything but it won't boot into windows at all. I bought a 2.5" enclosure yesterday. I'll copy all my important files onto my computer at the office. I'm waiting for HP to send out the recovery disk - should be here in about a week. In that time I'll try this:

If that doesn't work I'd be happy to try any other suggestions until the disk arrives. Looks like I'm going to end up wiping the drive and start new.

i know this is an older topic but for the record i think lsass.exe is a trojan that could probably be easily taken care of

For the record lsass.exe is a critical Windows system file, the deletion of which will let all the air out of your pretty balloon. When lsass.exe is infected, and taken over, by the Sasser virus even you will have lost control of your PC until you locate & apply the fix I mentioned, which mean unless you have access to a second PC you're stuck.

Another million or so threads will further support that Sasser is, indeed, a deadly threat, and that the PC of the user I was assisting showed every sign of being infected by it.
