Do you really know about "Pit Bulls"? If so, from first hand knowledge... or is from hear ce? or from the media? Test your knowledge! Let's hear what you have to say about the topic! Anything and Everything Pit Bull!

As a Reminder: The "Pit Bull" topic can be somewhat heated as people have strong feelings on both sides... you either love them or hate them... so, with that being said, let's remember to be civilized and respectful of other people's opinions. Also, this is a family friendly forum. Please refer to the Terms of Use.

Why am I posting about "Pit Bulls"? Because I love them... I rescue them... I understand them... and sadly, due to irresponsible dog owners as well as the heavy handed mainstream media portrayals of them... the Ignorance level is supreme whether you are with the media, a lawmaker, general public, or other... it's really sad of all the lies and monster myths being tossed around... I posted this topic to EDUCATE!! To share my knowledge and experience.

Yes, I am aware of the Dangerous Dog Act of 1991. Unfortunately, BSL (Breed Specific Legislation) is a widespread issue... Several US Cities and Counties also have certain Breed Bans. BSL has been proven to be ineffective and highly expensive to enforce. It also provides a false sense of security. The problem does not lie with the canine. Humans are the problem and their irresponsibility... We are failing our Dogs.

Whether your dog is a banned type depends on what it looks like, rather than its breed or name.

The above quote is from UK web link you posted... This should raise serious red flags (and be of great concern) on how outrageous this law is... this basically, gives the authorities the power to play judge, jury, and executioner with our Dogs. This law (and similar laws) gives them the power to visually identify a breed of dog. In respects to the American Pit Bull Terrier (the one and true Pit Bull), visual breed identification has proven to be unreliable and inaccurate. The American Pit Bull Terrier's characteristics are shared with several other and different breeds of dogs. Depending on who you ask, upwards of 30 different dog breeds are being called (and wrongly) a Pit Bull. Here is a visual test: Find the Pit Bull Here is another one... Can you find the Pit Bull? The fact is, unless you know the parentage and lineage of the dog, you cannot say with all certainty whether a dog is absolutely a Pit Bull or not. Not even the "experts" to include the authorities.

Now some may refute and say we have Canine DNA testing... which yes, we do. However, I have researched this pretty extensively and other than this being a relatively new science, none of the tests test for the American Pit Bull Terrier therefore, they are automatically deemed inaccurate.

I would like to also point out that Rottweilers are nicknamed Rotties, Dobermans are nicknamed Dobies, Labradors are nick named Labs, etc, etc, etc... None of those breed's nicknames are shared with other breeds yet, we are calling almost 30 DIFFERENT breed of dogs, Pit Bulls. How is this fair? This is part of the reason people think we have a "Pit Bull Problem"...

You failed to point out the example thus...

Example If your dog matches many of the characteristics of a Pit Bull Terrier, it may be a banned type.

My earlier post was merely a statement but it would be reasonable to assume that if the government decides to impose a ban on these types of dog it is because they do not have a good track record when it comes having a pacific nature.

I did not quote the example... However, I do believe I hit on the subject... currently more than two dozens of different breeds can fall under the "characteristics of a Pit Bull Terrier" The DDA is not "Pit Bull Legislation It is the Dangerous Dog Act which can cover most breeds of dogs. Visual Breed Identification is inaccurate and unreliable... I encourage you to check out the DDA Watch which is a UK Not-for-Profit Organization who are very much in-tuned with the DDA and similar legislation throughout the UK... They are also fighting for Fair Dog Legislation. DDA as it's written today, is not fair and is outlawing a whole breed... MULTIPLE breeds... BSL can very easily be compared to racism. Deeming a whole culture to be dangerous. DDA implies that all "Pit Bull Terriers" and other breeds are all dangerous therefore they must be exterminated... is like my saying all Muslims are dangerous and are all terrorists. Why would I have this mindset? Well, after 9/11... this way of thinking would be referred to a knee jerk reaction to a horrendous event... Note: No, not all Muslims are dangerous nor terrorists... there are good and bad in all cultures, nationalities, races, etc... Every person is their own individual as are all dogs (regardless of breed) are there own individual and should (logically) be judged accordingly. It's wrong to deem an entire race as bad as it is to deem an entire breed as bad.

Example If your dog matches many of the characteristics of a Pit Bull Terrier, it may be a banned type.

Yes, I understand your earlier post was merely a statement. :) However, it opened the door to better explain BSL. I've already discussed the visual breed identification... so, I'll be blunt. Newspapers (Journalists), Government officials, etc are not able to accurately call a dog a "Pit Bull" solely by its looks. It cannot be done, period. What is happening is the media and others are calling almost every dog they see as a "Pit Bull" and this is wrong and completely unjust in respects to the American Pit Bull Terrier. The American Pit Bull Terrier is being blamed for these attacks when in fact they are not guilty. What most people don't understand or realize or want to know... is the fact the American Pit Bull Terriers are NATURALLY friendly to humans... The APBT is arguably the most abused dog globally. Why is this? How can they be a danger to society AND be the most abused dog? You can't be both! The reason they are the most abused dogs is because they LOVE their humans... which includes their abusers... Now, one thing that does get the APBT into trouble is they are prone to Dog Aggression (meaning they don't get along or play nicely with other animals). Which to me, this is up to their owner to be Responsible and to NOT set their dog up to fail... Pit Bulls aren't your Dog Dogs... they are Human Dogs meaning they prefer being with their human and NOT another "dog buddy"... Give a Pit Bull a choice of being with their human OR another dog.. more often than not, they'll choose their owner.

DDA of 1991 was a knee-jerk reaction to a couple of high profile dog attacks that had occurred.
