Hi Darklighter,

Given our experience with the malware and the knowledge base built up over time, most of the time we are very sure of how to proceed and which programs to uninstall and which files to delete.

Anytime we are not sure of a program, we ask whether the user has installed it or even get the files scanned to determine if the file is bad. Some of the programs are bad but installed by users (e.g. in this case iWon). IF you point it to us, we will warn you appropriately.

Please be reassured that we do not randomly Delete files or uninstall programs.

Usually a person has more than one infection on the PC. All infections cannot be deleted in one step. Sometimes there are multiple steps we have to undertake to get the PC completely clean.

Sometimes due to some hidden infection, the fix doesnt go according to our script. All such deviations give us ideas of what the possible infections are.

So I would suggest this - Please go ahead and complete the fix. Make note of any observations, any step which was successful or the system threw up some comments. Please let me know when you post your next logs.

Thank you, I will do that first thing tomorrow. I am very sorry if I sounded like I didn't trust you--that's not what I meant at all. I am very, very greatful that you are here to help me, and I trust your advice completely, I just didn't know if the stuff I had forgotten to mention would make a difference.

I would feel really bad if I made your already difficult job harder. =)

Some of these questions are also on behalf of my parents, who know little about computers and need to be reassured all the time that what I am doing is correct. Thank you for being patient: I can only imagine how frustrating these things tend to get. :tazz:

Again, thank you, and I will post again as soon as I have the requested information. ^_^

Hi! I have completed the tasks given, as you requested. My dad was unwilling to part with Iwon, so that remains. Please note also that many of the things fixed seem fond of reappearing, and that I really did do everything you said. =)

I have noted the following things:

1. Aurora is still popping up, in greater numbers than before.

2. A new kind of ad named "Bulls eye" has begun appearing. It creates a new instance of IE, and thus aludes my Google Toolbar Popup Blocker.

3. As mentioned before, a program called "Downloader" seems to be getting more adware.

4. I was unable to find and delete the .dll assocaited with IDM. It doesn't seem to be causing any problems thus far; the rest of the IDM fix was totally successful.. I am free at last! :tazz:

Hi Darklighter,

Thats the problem of not having SP1a. I mentioned it before also that you are wide open to infection. Try this link for getting SP1a -
http://www.microsoft...p1/network.mspx
If you can, install it before proceeding with the rest of the fix.

Please print these instructions or copy them into a text file on your desktop as you wont have access to internet and this page during most of the fix.

1. Download files

Download these programs and save them in a new folder on your desktop -
FxIePlgn.exe
Nailfix
CWShredder

Update CWShredder

* Open CWShredder and click I AGREE
* Click Check For Update
* Close CWShredder

Dont run these programs yet.

Restart your computer and as soon as it starts booting up again continuously tap F8. A menu should come up where you will be given the option to enter Safe Mode.

2. Fix the infections

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Now run CWShredder. Click I Agree, then Fix and then Next, let it fix everything it asks about.

Run FxIePlgn.exe.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the logfile from the scan.

3. Run Hijack This

Run Hijack This and check the boxes next to following items -

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://websearch.drs...esearch.cgi?id=
R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://websearch.drs...esearch.cgi?id=

Hi! I have four concerns:

1. Bargain buddy is not listed in add-remove programs. When I attempt the fix, what should I do about that?

2. You say to uninstall "view manager". Is that the same thing as "Viewpoint Manager"? That is the cloest thing I can find.

3. ABI Networks is listed in Add/Remove programs, along with something called Navi search. Does anything else need to be done with these?

4. Finally, my internet connection has become really bogged down. Would it be safe to try and install the Service Pack with such an unpredictable connection? Should I wait until after the fix, or will something start automatically downloading new stuff when I connect to the net if I don't get it now?

Again, I am sorry. I would like to get this cleared away and not have to bother you again. :tazz:

Hi Darklighter,

1. Bargain Buddy is not present - ok leave it.

2. Yes, it please uninstall Viewpoint Manager

3. Thanx for your observations - Please uninstall Navisearch if it exists when you reach the relevant portion of the fix. Uninstalling ABI Networks would take you to the website of ABI Networks, which is responsible for putting Aurora on your PC !!!!!!! They have the uninstall tool but they collect a lot of information while they uninstall Aurora. So I suggest leave it alone but let me know if you see it.

4. It is better if you can download SP1a. However, if you fel that you cannot download it now, we will do so later.

Hope to see your PC clean soon.

I have one final question... What is on my system that keeps downloading new addware? It was just after I posted my log after complete the first fix that Bullseye buddy and Aurora began appearing. It began downloading literally as soon as I connected to the internet, before I even opend IE!

I thought this worth mentioning because I wasn't sure if I had mentioned that there was a program downloading stuff. Bargain Buddy also was there as soon as I connected to the internet.

Again, I am sorry if I keep complicating things. :tazz:

Darklighter,

What you have on your PC is malware. A lot of malware gets other malware and installs it on your PC. The key to cleaning a PC is to make sure that the worst infections are removed and then the rest of the junk is cleaned up. This has to be done fast else the malware multiplies and we have to start all over again !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi! I was just giving this process a whirl this morning... I have a rather large problem. Both the Bulleseye and Navisearch uninstallers require the internet to uninstall (they force you to fill out a survey before "uninstalling"). Since the uninstallers specifiy that neither should be running during uinstallation, and since, due to a lack of a net connection in safe mode, they will always be running, what can I do?! Further more, I can't seem to find the Aurora files correctly (they have random names), and the remaining hijack this stuff regenerate automatically on reboot. :tazz:

Please help. =(

Hi Darklighter,

Please do not go any websites to uninstall infections. You would most probably be taken to the website of the creater of the infection who will spy on your PC and collect information.

Please proceed with the fix completely and then finally when u r through, please report all deviations to me at one go !!!!!!!! I will figure out an alternate way of dealing with the infections

Hi! I have lots to report, sadly. =(

1. A Norton Anti-virus pop-up window just informed me that there is a Trojan sitting in my computer that it couldn't fix or remove. This occured when I tried running Ewido in normal windows (this could be a coinidence).

2. Literally everything slated for death has simply regenerated itself. Everything you told me to delete is back, with a vengance.

3. I again had difficulty locating the correct Aurora files. It is it possible to use Ewido or any other tool to clean out those miscellanous files?

4. My parents have doubts about removing Viewpoint, and desire that I ask you about it. Since this is there computer, I must respect their wishes in asking for information about it. I'm sorry for any inconvience this might cause you. ;)

Finally, thanks for everything. I apperciate your patience and hardwork in helping me get this cleared up. I am sorry if I have been a pain to work with; I really have tried my best! Because of your help, I have been inspired to join Geek U. :tazz:

Hi Darklighter,

It is good that you have decided to join GeekU !!!! You will hopefully learn something about what I am doing and Why !!!!

For your information, I handle a no. of cases in a day and believe that users need to be educated atleast a little bit so that their problems do not recur. However if all we staff here at Geekstogo were to fully educate users on why their PC was infected, what particular infections do and why particular files / programs were to be removed, we would not be cleaning any PCs at all !!!!!!!!!! We do not want to withhold information but please understand the tremendous strain that it would place on us. Users who want to learn more are always welcome to join GeekU.

Since you and your parents are very reluctant to carry out a lot of my recommendations, from now on I will only recommend the barest minimum steps. Hopefully you guys will have no problems with that. Once you learn the basics at GeekU then u can probably clean up your PC completely !!!!!!!!

Please carry out these instructions

Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please download Nailfix from here:
http://www.noidea.us...050515010747824
Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

For additional help in booting into Safe Mode, see the following site:
http://www.pchell.co.../safemode.shtml

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Save the logfile from the scan.

Next please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check:

F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

I am sorry. I am only 17, and this computer isn't mine. My mom and dad made me explain what I was doing, and if I couldn't, I was forced to find the answer before proceeding. I feel really bad about making things difficult for you. One of the reasons I actually wanted to join Geek U was so that I wouldn't have to bother you so much. I really apperciate the time you take to help me out.

If I should frustrate you again, please don't hesitate to let me know. I value your knowledge and help very much, and I do not want to offend you or make anything difficult for either of us.

I will post again when the requested task has been completed. :tazz:
