These logs are looking allot better. But we still have some work to do.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

uninstall some programs

NOTE** Because of the cleanup process some of the programs I have listed may not be in add/remove anymore this is fine just move to the next item on the list.

You can remove these programs using add/remove or you can use the free uninstaller from Revo (Revo does allot better of a job)

  • Please download and install Revo Uninstaller Free
  • Double click Revo Uninstaller to run it.
  • From the list of programs double click on The Program to remove
  • When prompted if you want to uninstall click Yes.
  • Be sure the Moderate option is selected then click Next.
  • The program will run, If prompted again click Yes
  • when the built-in uninstaller is finished click on Next.
  • Once the program has searched for leftovers click Next.
  • Check/tick the bolded items only on the list then click Delete
  • when prompted click on Yes and then on next.
  • put a check on any folders that are found and select delete
  • when prompted select yes then on next
  • Once done click Finish.

Update Adobe reader

Recently there have been vulnerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com.../readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

If you don't like Adobe Reader (53 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(7 MB) from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Note: When installing FoxitReader, be careful not to install anything to do with AskBar.

Clean Out Temp Files

  • This small application you may want to keep and use once a week to keep the computer clean.

    Download CCleaner from here http://www.ccleaner.com/

  • Run the installer to install the application.
  • When it gives you the option to install Yahoo toolbar uncheck the box next to it.
  • Run CCleaner. (make sure under Windows tab all the boxes of Internet Explorer and Windows explorer are checked. Under System check Empty Recycle Bin and Temporary Files. Under Application tab all the boxes should be checked).
  • Click Run Cleaner.
  • Close CCleaner.

I see You have MBAM installed on the computer - that is great!! it is a very good program! I would like you to run a quick scan for me now

  • Double-click mbam icon
  • go to the update tab at the top
  • click on check for updates
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
  • If you accidentally close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.


Download HijackThis

  • Go Here to download HijackThis program
  • Save HijackThis to your desktop.
  • Right Click on Hijackthis and select "Run as Admin" (XP users just need to double click to run)
  • Click on "Do A system scan and save a logfile" (if you do not see "Do A system scan and save a logfile" then click on main menu)
  • copy and paste hijackthis report into the topic

Hi Gringo,
Re how is computer doing: seems to be OK, but since the problems were on the internet and I've not done much there today, it is too early to be sure. I wasn't able to open a website I usually can open on IE. It did open on firefox. However, I received a pop-up ad to upgrade to a newer version of firefox. I think both browsers are out of date.

:Remove unneeded start-up entries:

This part of the fix is purely optional
These are programs that start up when you turn on your computer but don't need to be, any of these programs you can click on their icons (or start from the control panel) and start the program when you need it. By stopping these programs you will boot up faster and your computer will work faster.

  • Run HijackThis (rightclick and run as admin)
  • Click on the Scan button
  • Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):

Eset Online Scanner

**Note** You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan - Vista and win 7 right click on IE shortcut and run as admin

Go Eset web page to run an online scanner from ESET.

  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • click on the Run ESET Online Scanner button
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
    • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the add/on to be installed
    • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked
  • Click on Advanced Settings, ensure the options
    Scan for potentially unwanted applications, Scan for potentially unsafe applications, and Enable Anti-Stealth Technology are ticked.
  • Click Scan
  • wait for the virus definitions to be downloaded
  • Wait for the scan to finish

When the scan is complete

  • If no threats were found
  • put a checkmark in "Uninstall application on close"
  • close program
  • report to me that nothing was found

  • If threats were found
  • click on "list of threats found"
  • click on "export to text file" and save it as ESET SCAN and save to the desktop
  • Click on back
  • put a checkmark in "Uninstall application on close"
  • click on finish
  • close program
  • copy and paste the report here

There are some minor things in your online scan that should be removed.


delete files

  • Copy all text in the code box (below)...to Notepad.
    @echo off

  • Save the Notepad file on your desktop...as delfile.bat... save type as "All Files"
    It should look like this: Posted Image<--XPPosted Image<--vista
  • Double click on delfile.bat to execute it.
    A black CMD window will flash, then disappear...this is normal.
  • The files and folders, if found...will have been deleted and the "delfile.bat" file will also be deleted.


The rest of the Online scan is only reporting backups created during the course of this fix C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\, and/or items located in System Restore's cache C:\System Volume Information\, Whatever is in these folders can't harm you unless you choose to perform a manual restore. the following steps will remove these backups.

:Why we need to remove some of our tools:

Some of the tools we have used to clean your computer were made by fellow malware fighters and are very powerful and if used incorrectly or at the wronge time can make the computer an expensive paper weight.
They are updated all the time and some of them more than once a day so by the time you are ready to use them again they will already be outdated.

The following procedures will implement some cleanup procedures to remove these tools. It will also reset your System Restore by flushing out previous restore points and create a new restore point. It will also remove all the backups our tools may have made.
:DeFogger:

Note** Defogger only needs to be run if it was run when we first started. If you have not already run it then skip this.

  • To re-enable your Emulation drivers, double click DeFogger to run the tool.
  • The application window will appear
  • Click the Re-enable button to re-enable your CD Emulation drivers
  • Click Yes to continue
  • A 'Finished!' message will appear
  • Click OK
  • DeFogger will now ask to reboot the machine - click OK.
Your Emulation drivers are now re-enabled.

:Uninstall ComboFix:

  • turn off all active protection software
  • push the "windows key" + "R" (between the "Ctrl" button and "Alt" Button)
  • please copy and past the following into the box ComboFix /Uninstall and click OK.
  • Note the space between the X and the /Uninstall, it needs to be there.
  • Posted Image

:Remove the rest of our tools:

Please download OTCleanIt and save it to desktop. This tool will remove all the tools we used to clean your pc.
  • Double-click OTCleanIt.exe.
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.
  • If asked to restart the computer, please do so
Note: If you receive a warning from your firewall or other security programs regarding OTCleanIt attempting to contact the internet, please allow it to do so.

About Java


During the cleaning process if I found that Java was installed I asked for it to be uninstalled, Many home users will not miss it. If you use OpenOffice, play online games or use business applications which require Java, Then you need to install the latest version and make sure to disable it in your web browsers.

If an application or website requires it, you should receive a notification indicating that when you attempt to launch that application or access that website.

:The programs you can keep:

Some of the programs that we have used would be a good idea to keep and used often in helping to keep the computer clean. I use these programs on my computer.

Revo Uninstaller Free - this is the uninstaller that I had you download and works allot better than add/remove in windows and has saved me more than once from corrupted installs and uninstalls

CCleaner - This is a good program to clean out temp files, I would use this once a week or before any malware scan to remove unwanted temp files - It has a built in registry cleaner but I would leave that alone and not use any registry cleaner

Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware The Gold standerd today in antimalware scanners

One of the questions I am asked all the time is "What programs do you use" I have at this time 4 computers in my home and I have this setup on all 4 of them.

It is good security practice to change your passwords to all your online accounts on a fairly regular basis, this is especially true after an infection. Refer to this Microsoft article
Strong passwords: How to create and use them
Then consider a password keeper, to keep all your passwords safe. KeePass is a small utility that allows you to manage all your passwords.


The other question I am asked all the time is "How can I prevent this from happening again." and the short answer to that is to be aware of what is out there and how to start spotting dangers.

I will follow through with all of your recommendations.

I have no idea what I would have done without your help. The very bright and responsible young man who set up my computer and taught me how to do just about everything I need to know on a computer has moved on to other things. I've been solving problems on my own for about three years, dreading a disaster like this, not having a clue where to turn for help. Finding this resourse has been a surprise and a relief.

Hi Gringo,

All seems to be working well, but I have few more questions:

The last set of instructions said to delete a couple of files, including aTube_Catcher_Setup.exe. Does that remove the aTube Catcher program itself or just the set-up for the program? The aTube Catcher download ( this was before I learned to use custom install) is apparently where I got the malware in the first place, but I'd like to keep the program itself if it is safe to do so. I need to capture an expected new version of a youtube mp4 video from a private site to use in a powerpoint presentation, then convert the video to a form that can be linked to PP (2003). aTube Catcher was able to capture the video, and converted it to a wmv file which (I think) will work with PP. As you can tell, I have no idea what I am doing here, just know that I'd like to be able to show this video from locations where I can't count on connecting to the internet and youtube.

Questions:
1) is it safe to keep and use aTube Catcher?
2) should I remove the aTube Catcher setup.exe?
3) is it safe to capture a youtube video prepared by a reliable person and posted to his personal site?

More questions:
4)Why can't I connect any longer thru IE to a site I use regularly? (I get a grey screen with a small box containing a red X). I can connect to the site with firefox.
5) Do I want to upgrade IE from version 8 to version 9? 9 seems to have mixed reviews.

1. you are correct that it will only delete the setup file, youtube itself is a good place to get virus I see allot of people claim this is where they get it

2. yes remove the setup file - it will hurt nothing

3. depends on the source

4. doe this happen with other pictures and does it only happen on one site

5. always upgrade - the new features may take some time to get used to but normally it is safer

I've noticed a bunch of sites that wouldn't open lately, starting before the malware problem. I can't recall when it started, and I don't know when I upgraded AVG to 2013, but I've been wondering whether it is related. However, I changed to Avast during the malware cleanup, and it is still happening.

A few times I tried firefox and was able to open sites that didn't open on IE.

I never had problems with www.madgardeners.org until the malware problem began, tho I'm not sure when I last visited it before that. I almost certainly opened it within the last two-three weeks, but - like everything else - not sure when.

My hope is that this is more likely to be an annoying rather than a serious problem and is due to something about one or another kind of security software.

I am also getting lots of "You are about to leave a secure Internet connection. It will be possible for others to view information you send" messages. Since I'm not planning to "send" anything, I don't suppose this matters. But this is new, and it happens with both AVG and Avast.

first I would like you to go here and click on the fixit button - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923737


Then I want you to do the following

  • Start Internet Explorer.
  • click on "safety"
  • click on "Delete Browsing History"
  • make sure all boxes are checked
  • click on "Delete"
  • click on "Tools",
  • click "Internet Options".
  • On the "Advanced" tab, click "Reset"
  • put a check mark next to "Delete Personal Settings"
  • click "Reset" to confirm
  • when complete click the "Close" button
  • restart IE

Hi Gringo,
I did the fixit and deleted the personal settings, and reset, then restarted IE, which went to a new screen and asked a bunch of questions - I assume it was being re-installed?
I wasn't sure which options to choose, so I choose the default search provider (live search), no auto updates to search providers, no accelerators, and no compatibility view updates. I checked yes for "smart screen filter". I have no idea if these were wise choices.

The resulting screen was a messy MSN screen. I managed to change that to a nice clean google search box when I open IE. Which is what I want. However, the little "settings" place usually found in the upper right corner of the almost empty google screen is missing so I can't set the option to open search results in new windows. Instead there is a "sign in" button that takes me to a site to sign up for a google account. I've seen that screen before. I'm pretty sure I managed to avoid creating an account and somehow got back to the settings thing and set it to open google search items in new windows. I do recall that that I was having trouble for a while getting google to remember that setting, tho they eventually stopped annoying me.

I forgot to mention: I am able to access the website that I couldn't access before, and those annoying little warning boxes that kept popping up seem to have disappeared. Only problem remaining seems to be finding google setting.

Hi Gringo,
Aha - I found the missing google settings location. As far as I can tell all is well. I reconnected my external hard drive, deleted the one back-up that ran after I downloaded the malware, and am happy to be safe running regular back-ups again.
