Hi

I was on here a while back and my computer was fixed. The last week or so if I logged off at the end of my session when I log on after typing in my password the lap top screen is blue for about a minute before the icons appear. Today Windows has shown up a box with an entry telling me that there is a hard disk problem and that I must back my lap top up or I will lose files. I am not a computer expert and have no idea what that means. My LAP TOP has been running quite slow. I have just returned from India where I used it with a dongle but had no issues.

Thanks

I'm afraid I have some bad news. Your hard drive is failing. This is the 3rd or 4th Toshiba I've seen in the last month that has been failing.

As long as you can press the F1 key and get the computer to boot you can use it. But at some point you will likely boot up and the computer will go straight to a Repair my computer loop.

While the computer does boot up I would start backing up any personal data I wanted to keep.

What to back-up and not to back-up.

1) Backup all your important data files, pictures, music, work etc... and save it onto an external hard-drive or a USB flash drive. These files usually include .doc, .txt, .mp3, .jpg etc...
2) Do not backup any executable files or any window files. These include .exe's, .scr, .com, .pif etc... as they may contain traces of malware. Also, .html or .htm files that are webpages should be avoided.

Then you will need to take the computer to a repair shop and have a new hard drive installed....or you can start a topic in the Windows 7 operating system forum and ask someone there to walk you through replacing the hard drive if you want to attempt it yourself.
Once the hew hard drive is installed then you can transfer the personal files you backed up back to the new drive.

Wish the new was better.

OK. That isn't the same as the error I asked about. It may not be a failing hard drive. Are you getting the error when you boot windows up or when you try to update windows?

Forgive me but I'm trying to understand what is going on. Can you be a little more specific? What are you doing when the error messages come up? Do they stay on the screen long enough to write them down or do they just flash on the screen and the go away?

windows display the error message but today toshiba have displayed this
Disk0
Your HDD has the SMART Predict Failure function which monitors the HDD operating status. Your HDD is experiencing a problem and SMART monitoring software predicts that the HDD will fail. Toshiba strongly recommends you create a back-up for your HDD data. Then contact an authorized service provider in order to check your drive and purchase a new replacement drive if necessary.

OK, so it is a SMART hard drive failure prediction. We are back to my original warning in post#5. Your hard drive is failing. The last one I worked on booted up with the SMART failure message I posted in post #3. During that period it also gave a Windows message that the hard drive needed to be checked for errors. I ran chkdsk and it took over 20 hours for it to complete. Chkdsk found errors in over 8,000 sectors of the hard drive.
Then one day the computer booted up, but instead of giving the SMART Failure warning it just went straight to "Startup Repair" and it never completed.
That computer was only 2 years old too. That is why I advised you to start backing up your personal files while it is still booting up and you can.
We can go through the malware diagnosis and clean up process, but I think you are just wasting your time.
Or you can check our Hot Tech Deals forum and see if you can find a hard drive, or ask someone there if they know what will work.
You can also take the computer into a repair shop and have the hard drive checked, but every time I and others have seen the SMART Failure warning the hard drive has eventually gone belly up.

Sorry the news isn't better. Let me know what you want to do.

I have put all my photos on facebook and drop box. There is nothing on here that I need to save or back up really. The lap top continues to work every day as normal and that warning box has not appeared today. Is there something else on my lap top I need to save incase it dies tommorrow? I have a new IMac pc coming Tuesday it was for my brother but I guess I might have to keep it for myself.

I have tried to do a back up but I get confused. If I put a blank DVD disc in will it just all go onto the disk?

Well, let's rethunk this thing again. Every time I have seen the SMART Failure warning it comes up every time the computer is booted up and you have to press the F1 key to continue the boot. If it isn't happening every time you boot up maybe clearing whatever the errors are on the hard drive will cure it.
There's only one way to find out. I don see much of anything on the system but let's take care of what I see and run some additional scans.

As for backing up, you can use a CD or DVD or flash drive as backup media.
If you click the Start Orb and click Help and Support you can type backup in the box and click the search icon and Windows help will tell you exactly how to use Windows backup.

Step-1.
