After a while the machine crashed and could not be repaired...according to Curry's pc support people it was a motherboard problem (blown capacitors apparently, a not uncommon problem with entry-level pcs i believe). Anyway, I got a refund and got another pc. However, i decided i'd have a go at fixing the old one, so i replaced the capacitors, rebuilt the PC, got it re-started, and installed XP instead, cos i prefer that. All good so far....
...however, after the installation i've discovered i can't get sound. Initially i got the 'no mixer devices installed' error, so i installed what i thought was the right driver, Gateway Realtek HD Audio Driver. However, i am still not getting any sound from any audio devices (speakers or headphones), even after installation of the driver. Everything says it's working ok, and i don't get the mixer devices error, but i simply get no sound.
Can anyone help?
