The file is attached... and that dxdiaz-thingy seems resistant.

Since you're working with this stuff often, what defenses would you advice a computer to have?

Which antivirus would you recommend the most, and would you advice additional anti-malware, cleaners, etc?

Reading all the different comments on different apps around the net aren't making me any wiser, but I at least know that you know your stuff. :)

Ignore the previous log - a new log popped up after the restart where the removal was done. The first log was probably made before the removal of infections.

Could you just run a quick scan with MBAM to ensure that the load entry has gone please, I will answer the questions once I am sure it has gone

No, it popped up again. I removed it once more.

After the third search it was gone, though. Weird that the program needed two attempts.

The malwarebyte program can't find anything else, not even after a restart. It looks gone and feels gone - no errormessages or obvious signs of infections left.

I think I'll run a deep scan from a few other rescue cd's (Bitdefender or norton's perhaps) tonight, just to be sure, but it looks fine now! :)

OK lets remove my bits and bobs now

Subject to no further problems :)

I will remove my tools now and give some recommendations, but, I would like you to run for 24 hours or so and come back if you have any problems

Now the best part of the day ----- Your log now appears clean

A good workman always cleans up after himself so..The following will implement some cleanup procedures as well as reset System Restore points:

Remove ComboFix
  • Hold down the Windows key + R on your keyboard. This will display the Run dialogue box
  • In the Run box, type in ComboFix /Uninstall
(Notice the space between the "x" and "/")
    then click OK

    Posted Image
  • Follow the prompts on the screen
  • A message should appear confirming that ComboFix was uninstalled

Run OTL and hit the cleanup button. It will remove all the programmes we have used plus itself.

We will now confirm that your hidden files are set to that, as some of the tools I use will change that
  • Click Start.
  • Open My Computer.
  • Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
  • Select the View Tab.
  • Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Do not show hidden files and folders.
  • Click Yes to confirm.
  • Click OK.

Clear Restore Points

Go Start > All Programmes > Accessories > System tools
Right click Disc Cleanup and select run as administrator
When it pops up at the first prompt select OK after it has done some calculations the tabs will appear
Select More Options tab
Press Sytem Restore and Shadow Copies Cleanup button

Now that you are clean, to help protect your computer in the future I recommend that you get the following free programmes:

Posted Image Malwarebytes.

Update and run weekly to keep your system clean

Download and install FileHippo update checker and run it monthly it will show you which programmes on your system need updating and give a download link

If you use on-line banking then as an added layer of protection install Trusteer Rapport

It is critical to have both a firewall and anti virus to protect your system and to keep them updated. To keep your operating system up to date visit
To learn more about how to protect yourself while on the internet read our little guide How did I get infected in the first place ?Keep safe

I ran both Combofix and OTL from the memorystick... combofix, at least, can't be uninstalled, probably because of that.

Which specific antivirus would you recommend? Avast, Panda, Norton, Bitdefender, Viper, etc... there are so many out there, but which do you have the best experience with?

Well I have been using Avast since 4.8 which was about 8 years ago and I have never moved since, nor been infected.. For the free ones there is Avast, Avira and AVG. Paid for I would plump for Kaspersky
Although I have seen all AV's represented on the forum here with infections, so none are immune.

This one that you had is the first time I have ever seen it, and looking at the amount of files that needed removing it would probably have swamped any AV out there

A layered protection would probably be best, an on access AV and an on demand anti malware like MBAM

Well, thank you for the help! I would've had a hard time doing this by myself. :) I'll be running a few deep scans before handing the computer back to my friend, but unless something suddenly pops up (it might, you never know), in which I'll be quick to post here tomorrow, then I consider this matter closed.

I noticed a nice paypal icon there... I'll be sure give a little something for the job.

Again, my thanks!

 My pleasure, it is good for my knowledge to see something different to the run of the mill infections. I will now be able to attack this one a bit faster next time I see it
