mysterious popups - some Aurora, some not [RESOLVED]

Hello there. If anyone could help me sort throught this HijackThis Logfile and tell me what's up that would be great. I'm working on a friend's laptop and have tried everything under the "Click Here before posting a Hijack This log." section, to no avail... I still get these mysterious popups when connected to the internet... some of them just have a "-" in the title bar, and some have the word "Aurora" in the title bar. Below is my log from HijackThis. If someone could post a reply and help me out, that would be awesome. Oh, and before I found this site, I installed SP2 before getting rid of all the malware i've already gotten rid of, so I may have messed things up worse, I don't know. Any help you could offer would be appreciated. Thanks, -Brian

Hi Brian and welcome to GTG.

We usually advise users to hold off on SP2 install unless you are not having any problems. But since you installed it already, tell us if you still get problems after we verify that you are clean. If it causes problems, you might have to reinstall SP2.

Please print out the instructions here (or save it in Notepad) so that you can follow along more easily.

Download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ and install it. Update to the newest definitions. If you have trouble updating, you may do it manually at http://www.ewido.net...wnload/updates/ Do NOT the Ewido scan yet.

Please download Nailfix at http://www.noidea.us...050515010747824 Unzip it to the desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Right click on this link http://www.greyknigh...lO15Domains.inf and choose Save As. Save it to your desktop. Right click on that file and choose Install. It will run immediately (you won't be able to see anything happen). You may delete it afterwards.

Reboot into Safe Mode by hitting the F8 key repeatedly until a menu shows up (and choose Safe Mode from the list). In some systems, this may be the F5 key, so try that if F8 doesn't work.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on nailfix.cmd. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Next run a full scan in Ewido. Save the log from the Ewido scan so that you can post it later.

Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

Uninstall these from the Add/Remove panel if listed:

C:\Program Files\Common Files\WinTools\

Restart your computer.

Download FindIt's.zip http://forums.net-in...=post&id=142443 to your desktop.

1. Unzip/extract the files inside to a folder on your desktop.
2. Open the folder. Double click on FindIt's.bat and wait for Notepad to open a text file. It will take a while so please be patient... Note: If you are having problems using FindIt's.bat (16 bit error), copy autoexec.nt from the C:\WINDOWS\repair folder to C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder. Now try running FindIt's.bat.
3. Then post the results here along with the new HijackThis log. Also post the Ewido scan results here.

Crap I can't believe I forgot about the Ewido program... you had that listed in your things to do before making a post... oh well, thank you for being patient with me. I will be following all your directions within short order, however right now I have the more pressing problem of sparks randomly flying out of my power outlets in my home, so I think I need to track that down before fixing my friend's laptop... :tazz: Thanks again for the help and I'll be posting my ewido log and any other info within a couple days.

Hey Thanks a ton for helping me work through this, however, for this particular system, I will no longer require any assistance, as the owner has decided to have me upgrade his internal hard drive from 30 gigs to 80 gigs. I will be replacing it and doing a clean system install, so all his problems should go bye-bye. If there's anything I should install for him aside from Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, and AVG to keep things under control, please reply and let me know. Thanks again for your quick response and willingness to help a guy out. -Brian
