After downloading AOl Computer Check-up my Dell Inspiron 2200 refuses to boot up. It starts as normal but then freezes and displays the message "The application failed to initialize properly (Oxc0000142). Click on OK to terminate the application." Doing so produces no result.

Sorry to say this but you may be another victim of a so called system optimizer software :upset:
Any software that promises to boost performance or interferes with the registry should be given a wide bearth, some info for you http://miekiemoes.bl...weaking_13.html

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key when you power up.

Do you have an XP installation disk or a system restore disk for the computer.

Have you checked for a recovery partition on the HDD by pressing CTRL+F11 when you power up - Check for but Do not use this if there is important data on the HDD that you have not backed up.
